need help with cakes

I noticed when i checked on my 2 cakes today that the perlite was completely dry. Why is this? I kept good humidity levels i don't understand. Will the cakes be damaged i am not sure how long the perlite has been like this yikes. Also i am going on vacation soon and was wondering if i can leave cakes alone to fruit by themselves for two weeks? Could i just make a big whole for oxygen flow??
thanks

The water that is held by the perlite evaporates, causing the wanted RH. The water won't stay in your FC forever though. It's not sealed or anything. That's why it's dry. It simply evaporated into the air. The cakes should be OK.

If they fruit during these two weeks, you'll most likely find a blackish goo in your FC. You might want to store them in the fridge. You have no guarantee that they'll fruit after that, though.
Your FC is suppose to have plenty of holes for constant FAE. Big holes ain't as good as many small holes (1/4 inch holes with 2 inches of space between them for example), cause they tend to allow "wind" in your FC, making it dry out a lot faster.

Your FC should have the proper holes to allow humidity to build up and air to flow in.
If your perlite is completely DRY...I mean shit what does your FC look like and how many time do you fan it?
Most definitely you should RE SOAK your perlite and drain the excess water.
Like fhakface said...You would probably see just a goo in your container...2 weeks is way to long to have a cake in your FC, seeing that in the proper humidity mushrooms usually reach maturity in half that time.
You WANT your cakes to stay in a constant humidity to stay healthy...Ive never actually had the need to put a cake in the fridge, but im not sure you have another choice, im just not positive on how well your cake is gonna grow by the time you get back?

Yeah thanks, i re soaked the perlite and put tape over some of the holes because i think too much humidity was getting out. Yeah i am growing Penis Evny strain and i know they tend to be a very slow colonizing and fruiting strain. I guess the only problem with leaving them for two weeks would be the inability to fan them no? I fan once every other day usually

I would mist 3-4 times a day and fan 5-6 times a day/ Always fan after you mist. Water evaporating off your cakes is the biggest pinning trigger. Thats and a good 12/12 light schedule using a 6500K bulb

You're suppose to fan a lot more often! The lack of FAE wouldn't be your biggest problem. Time would be. As said above, your fruits will most likely mature and over mature while you're away, which again might well result in goo like stuff all over the FC.
As suggested above as well, I'd rather store the cakes in the fridge while you're gone. You'll be on the safer side that way.

yeah i will either store in fridge or have a friend take care of em while i am gone. I have only two cakes in a small plastic tub, wouldn't you think a lot of holes would cause the perlite to dry out? I taped up most of the holes and have about 3 on each side. The tub is aprx 12 by 11 inches

It depends on how much perlite you have in there. There's a good chance it'll dry out, yes. If you have the possibility of a friend to watch your cakes, I'd clearly take it! It's the best you can do. Storing them in the fridge would be better than waiting for them to goo away, in my opinion, but -as said above- doesn't guarantee them to fruit (on).

you should have 4-5 inches of perlite. Dont cover any of the holes thats going to work against you. have all your holes open and put 4-5 inches of perlite in that sucker and you will be fine . Remember mist 3-4 times a day and fan 5-6
