How should PC'd WBS feel... (moisture question)
    #12025067 - 02/13/10 11:46 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've had some interesting experience with WBS. I feel like it is always too dry. I am using 1/4" GE holes covered with 1 layer of tyvek or 2-3 pieces of micropore tape. I've had success with it but it seems like it is too dry. I just had some 2 week old jars with no growth so I dumped em and out of curiousity I squeezed some of the grains and theyre rubbery, i couldnt get any moisture out of them. I soak for 24 hours then simmer for like 20-30... I use the TP test and the agar hand test and it seems to be fine until it comes out of the PC and cools for a day then my grains roll around in the jar like theyre dry from the store. I let the PC hit 15psi then I put it to medium and it doesnt rock anymore but i hear a hissing. I let if cool down until it pressurizes all by itself then I remove the jars and foil, shake and let em sit for 8 hours.

I don't know where I am going wrong or even if I am going wrong but the grain seems to flow around the jar too easy. I even try to make it wetter so I have a problem of too wet and not too dry. Honestly though, I just did some g2g and its been 13 days and some are like 95% done and others are doing shitty or 50% done. I think I need a good ISO to eliminate this MS bullcrap. Is this how WBS is?

LxWxH in inches then multiply .55 (the amount of fl oz in a square inch) then divide that number by 128 (the amount of fl oz in a gallon) to get an accurate amount of volume for the space.

It shouldnt be simply because its MS, theres nothing wrong with MS....unless of course your a little anal and want to go for a perfect run everytime.

From time to time you may get a slow jar due to genetics, but certainly not a whole batch....you need to look elsewhere for your problem...

Perhaps baterial contamination or lack of gas exchange....what sort of filter do you use on your grain jars?.

My grain looks dry when going into the PC and looks damp when its out.

Maybe try a diffrent brand of WBS. I recently switched to a 'husk free' variety and have seen a big improvement in colonization times.

But overall, my moneys on bacterial contam or FAE.

I usually find that I can't get it dry enough, before i put it in the pc. It always seems i could have gotten it just a bit drier.

Problem is too much GE. You don't need very much at all. I use one hole, stuffed very tightly with polyfill and it's plenty. Also, what is the ambient humidity of the room you are colonizing them in?

Neway, my bet is that you're losing too much moisture from the jar during colonization. Switch to polyfill perhaps, or put in a room humidifier. You aren't incubating are you? That will also dry you out faster.

I find wbs the hardest of the grains to work with. You have to get the moisture content right or you either get the wet spot contamination or it dries out. I like rye or popcorn better.

You can probably save those stalled jars. If you gently break it up with a long knife, you could get it out in large chunks. Brush loose all the dry seeds and give the chunks a soak in cold water for a few hours before you spawn it. I bet it'd do fine.

Peace.
