WBS jar ?
    #12023927 - 02/13/10 08:22 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

So a friend of mine tryed his first run with the wild bird seed tek. He called me over to ask some questions. I took a look at his jars and they didn't turn out like my jars in the past did. His jars are 9 days old and have the spores in them. They have been sitting in a tub in pure darkness. When I looked at one of the jars the bird seed looked very damp/wet and I tipped the jar over and the wbs just poored to the other side in clumps. My jars in the past were hard for the most part.

My question is, did he mess up his jars or do you think there good to go and to just put them back and wait??

Sounds too wet like ya said, 9 days is a long time too.  Let them sit and in the meantime do some more jars and show him how to do it this time

well I told him to put a heating blanket in his tub tub make them nice and warm. Think that will fix or help? he did over 13 jars so I would hate to tell him to dump them all and start over.

You could swap the lid for some tyvek of polyfill (flat stuff, not stuffing, to make it easier to make a flat cover) and hope that some evaporation gets rid of the excess water. Careful of contaminants when doing the swap though - do normal stuff like spray the air with lysol or similar.

he has tyvek then the lid with one hole stuffed with polly fill then 2 coffee filters over them. your saying to take all that over and just stuff the jar with poly fill??

i wouldnt swap the lids just keep them as they are
if you do swap them theres a chance for contams to enter
plus you will be putting a filter on them that is not sterile

how did he prep his WBS
what tek did he use

also no need for a heat blanket or to keep them dark
a shelf in any room at room temp will be just fine

he said he soaked the wbs, picked out the floaters, put them on low boil, washed them off then let them strain for 20 mins with foil over strainer. took his jars and filled them up half way then put tyvek, lid with 1 hole in it with polly fill and then 2 layers of foil over them. pc them @ 15 psi for an hour, let them cool over night then took the foil off and and knocked them up.:syringe:

He shoulda let them strain longer.  I wait until most of my wbs doesn't stick to a dry paper towel

I also would like to add that there is not any standing water in the bottom of the jars. the wbs just looks very wet. If you tip the jar over it falls in clupms kinda :uhoh:

he shouldnt be messin with the jars at all
just inoculate them and let them sit

you should see growth in about 7 days or so with spores
sometimes it takes longer tho

do they smell funny kinda like fermenting apples?

thats better than the temps he will be getting in that tub
if your temps get too hot it increases the chance for contams to set in
they thrive at higher temps

also trust me when i say those jars need to be able to breathe
i have mine in the box the jars they came in just sitting out in the open
and they all do well every time

ohh I hear you load and clear! I am with you 100% on the open air ect..
I was just trying to think of a way for his jars to loose some water WITHOUT having to open them up or anything like that. I would hate to see any first timer make over 15 jars and not make out with at least 1 good colonized jar! It's like getting a brand new puppy and you have it for a few days and you fall in love with it. The next thing you know the puppy gets heart worm and kicks the bucket on you. What a sad thing to happen

theres really no way to dry them out safely
you just kinda gotta roll with them and hope for the best

is there any mycelium growth at all in them?

not that I could see. I'm just going to let him heat the jars to get the ball rooling from the reptile heat pad and just tell him to take the tub off and let them sit for 2 weeks. If nothing has started  I'm just going to buy him a beer and a case of new jars and tell him to start from scratch.

ok so I got a call this morning and it seems that the reptile heating pad under the plx glass with the jars on top and the tub upside down to cover them and hold in the heat to 84 deg is starting to dry out the jars. the tub is raised 2 inches off the ground so the cold air will suck in and bring new air into the tub. I cant see contam grown because the jars have tyvek, lid with polly fill and then 2 coffee filters on them. If anyone has any more thoughts or advice I can give hime to help save his jars please drop in your 2 cents
