PF cakes for Panellus ?
    #1200434 - 01/08/03 10:07 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I have used this with cyans and azures with good result(for spawn only minus the verm).I was curious what you folks think of this adaptation for PF style fruiting of Panellus?
Instead of whole WBS and smallish alder chip.
WBS flour and alder dust(pepper grain size)50/50 blended w/verm in the traditonal ratio for PF cakes.
Fruiting cakes in a terrariun for viewing.
My son is fascinated with the "glowing mushrooms" and wants to make them his science project this year so any advice or critcism is welcome  Thanx in advance :grin:WR

ROTFALMAO.....PF tek in the schools!Get this my son is convinced he can get portobellos to fruit on cakes and will some day prove me wrong!(he is 10 yrs old,and probably 20-30 IQ point better than the old man )BTW The PF cake Idea was his. Peace WR

It should work, they don't need casing. Shiitake are grown on blocks (cakes) made from sawdust supplemented with bran.
The problem with Flamullina are the low temperatures needed for pinning and fruiting.

Aren't you thinking of Panellus when you talk about the "glowing mushrooms", or does Flammulina glow too:confused:

No. As far as I know these the glowing shrooms are:
Armillaria mellea, Omphalotus olearius, Panellus stipticus ,Mycena chlorphos & Mycena citricolor (http://bioart.co.uk/lux/)

The Pannelus will colonize and eventually form small mushrooms on standard PF cakes. Unfortunately the mushrooms will not grow large or develop normally on grain/flour based substrates. You should see better results with your wood additive. The PF cakes should glow faintly before birthing and increase in brightness after birthing (they need oxygen to glow) The small grey mushrooms that eventually form will glow more so than the mycelium. Good luck!

Well, I don't have a prefered method with this species. I haven't done all that much with it. The best method for actual mushrooms would probably be a shiitake method. I suspect that colonized dowels pounded into a drilled hardwood log would work great.

I have made glowing agar plates that are interesting. If you have specific questions I can try to answer them.

You mnetion on the web site that the mycobags work with this species. Does it? I have not yet tried shitake in an inddor environment mostly because it seems to take so long to develpo. Is pannelus similarly slow?

Thanx Workman,I will probably make up some dowels and inoculate in my woods for fun.For my sons project I think I will experiment with some different cake substrates(Hardwood grains/dust,WBS flour,Kelp, verm, dash of maple syrup to start, mmmm tasty )I will post how/if this works.Thanx again  WR

Panellus is slow, similar to shiitake. It will colonize, glow and pin on a mycobag (and pf cake) but in my experience you will not get fully developed mushrooms on those substrates.

Is that true even if supplment straw dust was used in a micobag?

This is mostly my boys project and I think he'll be stoked to just get a glowing "cake"! I would like to get them established on the trail behing my house( I nightwalk quite often ) and having some glowing freinds on the path will be fun .
What about Omphalotus(sp?)or some of the other luminescent fungi?Would you recomend any as being more suited to our(I think our ) area.I am in the coast range west of Huegene and have mixed forest all around and Have been slowly following Stamets example of Myco-permaculture,hence working with wood lovers like Pleurotus,P.cyan and azure, shitake(sucesses)and some others,Miatake,Ganoderma, stropharia (failures).I have a successfuly fruiting semillanceata site which I established by a cloned culture 5 yrs ago of which I am VERY proud, any way I am rambling as I at times am wont to do  Peace WR

This is easier than it sounds.....I borrowed my friends burro and penned him in a suitable site and allowed the dung to slightly accumulate.I then began throwing a handfull of semi's in his grain/hay a couple times a week for him to eat.IMO spores passing through the gut of ruminants is important as I have not been able to get active live cultures to fruit any other way.So after a summer of crapping spores and me transplanting the mycelia thoughout the "pen", fall brings the fruits.I guess not really cloned culture but most definatly the same pale cap, geenish stem base strain of semi's that he was "inoculated' with.I gave back the donkey and now have just been supplimenting with composted crap and it produces spring(light) and fall(heavy) for 4yrs now.

Both my kids are very bright,my son is ten and tests out in the the top .5% in mathmatics AND science and my daughter is in the 97th% in reading. When given the stewardship of minds like these I find myself working HARD to keep up with their interests.Since my boy read Stamets and saw his son in the book he has thought fungi were extra cool and has had to divide his intersts between biology and electronics. As for my land I truly hope to have a varied myco-culture (fair start ) when I leave it to the kids and it looks like my son may continue the project.Thanx for the interest and have goodun' WR:grin:
