Well I have nothing to case with unfortunately. I am going to attempt to fruit directly out of the jar; whether or not that is possible I don't know. I don't really care about yields so it's worth a try.
After the popcorn is 100% colonized, what should I do? Remove the lid and set it out in the open? Mist, or put it in a FC?
Thysin- I've got some BRF cakes colonizing right now, I just need something to keep me busy. For whatever reason they're taking over a month and they are only 1/2 pint jars.

Well, I would do rez-effect then if you have to, more area for fruits. I've crumbled cakes between two layers of field cap verm and had excellent results. I believe rez effect was actually developed for grains, so I'd go check that out.

Might I inquire as to why you have nothing to case with? Vermiculite isnt very hard to find, to be honest you could probably still use tin pans, and just not case - but it would work MUCH better if you got some verm - even straight verm works decent.

Thysin: Can you explain what you mean by rez effect?
Supermarket- I have vermiculite, but I thought you had to mix it with something for casing. You say I can use straight verm though. Got a good tek or process for it?

http:// how about this, ill stop being a closet popcorn grower. lol. it for some reason has really gotten a bad rap. There must be something about it, because as soon as it gets mentioned, it is on. I assume that some folks have had allot of trouble with it. But i had more trouble with rye. I have rye grass going right know, and it seems to be going a lot slower. This is just my experience.

I sent you a pm with the link to rez-effect, wasn't sure if I could post it here(links to other OMC). But for the benefit of others reading the thread I'll explain briefly(all it needs).
Rez-effect is just mixing colonized grain with equal parts field cap verm as if you were spawning to bulk, incubate it for a few days, then case and fruit.

Sorry to go completely off topic here, but I don't want to make another thread just for this. Here are some pictures of two PF tek cakes that were inoculated on 1-10-10. Finally, over a month later, we have pins...I think.
Jar #1

Jar #2

Do those look like pins? In #1 it's pretty obvious but in #2 you have to look carefully just to see it. It's a small white thing. I have a shotgun FC and I'm following RogerRabbit's procedures. Should I go ahead and do the 24 hour dunk and roll in vermiculite, or wait for more pins?

Not very well. Popcorn is not a popular grain for mycology, it just doesn't work well. Try rye or WBS.
I just don't get why you keep saying this. I have always had excellent results spawning it to any substrate. I suspect when you tried it you didn't boil it long enough. I boil it for 90-120 minutes to hydrate it. Then I strain it, dry it some, and pc it.

I'd dunk/roll/fruit...be careful with the pins, they should survive and make you very happy. If you're talking about the white wart in the second pic, yup, that's a pin.
edit: Can't really tell in the second one but it's fully colonized right? Saw some dark spots, if it isn't make sure to remove the uncolonized sections to prevent contams.

This is retarded. Why waste your time colonizing popcorn if you're just going to totally waste it.
Good luck fruiting it like that. You'd get 10 times better results spawning it to anything, even potting soil if you have to.

Because I paid for it and don't give a damn about your opinion. Thanks to some helpful advice from another member though, I am going to case it now.

http:// funny you would mention it. here is a picture of some jars I tried once. they are popcorn with a little 50/50 on top. They grew mushrooms, but its hard to get them out. They also needed to be placed in a fruiting chamber. i couldn't get them to fruit just in the jars. check out all those cakes behind the jars. this was my transition from cakes to grain. sorry the picture is side ways.

First PF Tek [Re: roaddog]

I'm back with a PF tek question. It doesn't deserve a new thread so I'll just keep it in my own.
So those pictures of my cakes up there...I did the 24hr. dunk and rolled them in verm last night, then stuck them in a shotgun fruiting chamber made according to RogerRabbit's videos. It has lots of 1/4" holes in all six sides and is raised about a half foot off the ground for airflow. There's about 2" of perlite that was saturated with water and allowed to drain before it was put in the FC.
According to my digital humidity gauge, it was at 69% last night and its 70% right now. Now I know that mushrooms need at least 90% humidity, if not more, right? I worked too damn hard drilling hundreds of holes only to have this
What did I do wrong?

Need more perlite. Watch the vids again- four to five inches.

I figured that was it. It's pretty small so I thought I could get away with less, but apparently not.

http:// well these mushies were grown on popcorn. but you cant expect anything like this by fruiting in the jar. and i think it would be better to use some sort of casing layer, if you decide to fruit in the jar. The only reason i did it, was to have a better understanding of grains. it allowed me to watch the proses, a little better, by being able to look through the glass. this allowed me to have a better understanding of water content, during the fruiting stage. I used the growing in the jar thing as more of an experiment, than a productive way to grow mushrooms.keep this in mind if you decide to try it. i learned allot, but i didn't get a whole lot of mushrooms out of it. but it did work. i did get 3 flushes, out of it.good luck.

cloned c. costa rica in a quarter pint jar.
 Transferred agar to popcorn.
You can see the wedge of agar stuck to the glass. This jar got neglected, didn't get shaken soon enough.
Spawned to a straw log, just bigger than a football.

You can see the popcorn kernals as blue nodes on the log.
Boomers! (these are the biggest costas i've ever seen)
