Just finished 5 jars
    #12021526 - 02/13/10 12:46 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

inoculated one jar a day ago, and just finished boiling 4 jars. Waiting for them to cool so i can inoculate them

Wish me luck! this is my first grow and i'm hoping to get at least 2 or 3 good jars.

My only concern is that maybe my substrate is too wet, but maybe i'm just being paranoid

What did you use as your substrate? How much water did you mix in?

for the 4 one pint jars i just did, i mixed 2 cups of brown rice flour (freshly grounded), 4 cups of vermiculite (fine grain) and about a little over 2 cups of water all in the one bowl. I had just enough to fill the last jar. Then put about 3/4-1 in of dry verm on top.

Do you know what field capacity is? You want your substrate to be at field capacity. You want it to not leak water when you simply hold it in your hand. When you slightly squeeze it, a few droplets should come out.
I would go with the Pf tek to start out. You have a much less chance of anything contaminating the jars if you use 1/2 pint jars. This is because the mycelium colonizes the smaller jar faster then the pint and can fight off contaminants.
If you stick to the precise Pf methods you should not have any problems. I am going to be transfering my almost fully colonized cakes to a bulk substrate.

Since you didn't inoculate the jars yet, why don't you just create a new mix and make sure it is at field capacity. Make sure that you mix the verm with the water first, slowly adding water and stirring, then add the BRF. When you tilt the bowl you should only see a very fine small amount of water flow to the side that is tilted downward.

Just to clarify here, though I'm sure you know this, field capacity is the accepted moisture content for substrates like coir and manure, but for PF tek you want it to feel light and fluffy, and slightly dry, no drops even if you squeeze very hard. 2 cups water for 4 cups of verm and 2 cups of BRF is right, it's better to have a drier substrate than a wetter one, because your mushroom mycelium will colonize faster, then you can dunk before first flush to get moisture content correct.

well the substrate was moist, a lot like wet sandbox sand. No water at the bottom of the bowl or anything

You're probably good then, I wouldn't restart from scratch, but I can't tell for sure because I can't see/feel your sub. You can always start up side projects in case those do fail though, you learn with experience. When I first started with cubes I inoculated a new batch of jars every 2 weeks for a few months, once every batch was done with it's 2nd or 3rd flush I had a new batch waiting to be birthed.

you dont need to make new jars. you should have gone slightly UNDER on the water content instead of over but dont worry about it. at worst itll just take longer to colonize. if you really want to make new jars you can but i would just go with what you have myself.
make sure to take the foil and tape  off after you inoculate this is very important
