Hydrated Lime in WBS/RGS/CC Jars?
    #12021624 - 02/13/10 01:05 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I'm wondering if one could use a pinch of hydrated lime anywhere during the prep of grain process, so it would positively effect a myc culture transfer to WBS/Rye/Cracked Corn. I'm taking a sample from the center of a cleaned knot, which is unfortunately in some bacterial grains at the moment....I know I can save the sample this way, I just want to know about the lime

Its not gonna save you from contamination. Throw it out and start over.

I know it isn't, but I figure if I can get a healthy cross-section from one of the large BRF pieces originally moved, what could it hurt to try and save this particular strain? I realize that the lime may not work, I haven't made the jars yet, this is just research.

Would it not make sense that if someone can use lime in a casing layer to stave off contams, that a very small amount in your grains would help to keep a little bacteria at bay? I'm not taking contamination, just a little smell/slime syndrome

Lime temporarily keeps trich from growing. Lime doesnt stop bacteria. When you compost lime actually speeds up microbes.

Not only that but Lime is used to buffer things to a alkaline/Base Ph. Since Myc loves an acidic nature hydrated lime would slow down the myc growth. Always use gypsum and maybe some weak coffee water for the soak of your grains that will give it a boost
