These are the ones that I really can't live without:

Adblock Plus
Auto Copy
AutoAuth
AutoFormer
Close Tab By Double Click
Download Statusbar
ErrorZilla Mod
Greasemonkey
OptimizeGoogle
Paste and Go 2
Popup ALT Attribute
Resizable Textarea
StumbleUpon
Tab History

I have these installed too but I could get by without them for normal browsing (although a lot of them are essential for web development):

Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper
Annoyance Remover
Behind The *Asterisks*
Closy
Coral IE Tab
dragdropupload
Favicon Picker 3
Firebug
HTML Validator
Live HTTP headers
No-Referer
Organize Status Bar
Page Speed
PatchForLibrary
RDown Rapidshare Downloader
Screengrab
Split Browser
User Agent Switcher
Web Developer Toolbar

essential for normal people:
Adblock Plus
Download Statusbar

essential for me:
Vimperator (adds vim-like keyboard navigation for pretty much everything)
FirefoxNotify (sends browser alert messages through dbus notifications on linux. gives it a more integrated feel)

i have Video Download Helper installed also but i could live without it.

i keep things pretty light..

STUMBLEUPON!  I have wasted more time on the computer using stumbleupon than I'd care to admit.

Damn I've never used one addon, but I guess I've never really felt the need.  The only time I get popups is when I look at free porn.

i'm looking at noscript now.  so basically it can prevent script running from sites you don't want it to run from? does that in turn prevent viruses and and pop ups?

i'm not exactly the most tech saavy guy, but i'm trying to learn more and more about computers.

Switch to a modern internet browser like Opera or Chrome.  Firefox really has lost its edge

Agreed, until Opera or Chrome have proper addon support they'll never replace Firefox for me.

Yea it's more mature, but the design of it is very inefficient compared to more modern styled browsers.  They are working on it though, I think by version 4 or something they plan to have updated the whole underlying design

The addons I need are available for Chrome...it's a huge improvement to have an exif viewer in Chrome.
