I found Mandrake 9 easier to install than win2k. Windows install takes longer too; i have to hunt around for drivers, and boot up in VGA to install my grfx card drivers etc. I find that KDE3 runs quite slow on my machine though (500MHz) so i tend to stick to win2k for desktop stuff.

I don't think anyone mentioned Lindows . It is linux and can run all linux based apps but can also run a small amount (and growing) number of windows based apps. And as for desktop OS read the page but here are some screen shots.
LindowsOS desktop after installation.
LindowsOS with built-in Netscape 7.0 Web Browser.
LindowsOS can now connect to Microsoft Windows machines over the network
LindowsOSTM 3.0 is a new operating system that delivers the power, stability and cost-savings of Linux? with the ease of windows. LindowsOS brings a new choice to desktop computing because it is?
A "Broadband OS"
Designed from the beginning to optimize the future world of high-speed Internet connectivity Connects users seamlessly to applications software via LindowsOS Click-N-Run technology Expandable to seamlessly support future computing devices via digitally delivered drivers Stable, at its core, running on efficient and stable Linux technology Affordable
Only $129 for the OS and hundreds of software titles for home, business, and education ONE year membership of Click-N-Run Warehouse StarOffice and other top programs are included at no extra charge Family licensing allows you to use on multiple computers vs. old way of one license per machine Easy-to-Experience
Comfortable, easy-to-use interface using windows, mouse, keyboard shortcuts, cut-n-paste, etc. Compatible with files and data from older operating systems and applications (.doc, .xls, .ppt, .mp3, etc.) Over a thousand quality software titles can be added with just one click of the mouse Easy to install in under 5 minutes or purchased pre-installed on a LindowsOS Certified Computer The entire system operates as a whole, making it easy to install, use, update, and add new software via Click-N-Run
Which specific MS Windows compatible programs can WINE run?
Currently, there are only a handful of MS Windows compatible programs that WINE has been successful in running reliably. LindowsOS gained notoriety for having invested heavily into WINE when we first started and making LindowsOS the first non-MS Windows operating system that could install and somewhat run Microsoft Office 2000. (WINE does not currently work with other versions of Office, such as Office XP.)
Over time, it's possible that more programs could eventually be supported using WINE, but for now there are very few MS Windows compatible programs that the average, non-technical user can reliably use for day-to-day productivity.

In my opinion, Windows is a great operating system if you're not into computers and only want to use them for surfing, playing games, writing and stuff like that. On the other hand, if you like to fiddle and tweak with your computer, Windows is pure shit and Linux kicks it's ass by far.

Similar not exactly the same. Lindows is supposed to be simplified linux with good support. The price you pay is for support not for the software. Software should be free.

GNU/Linux is free. Well I never paid for Windows too, but installing them made me a criminal.

Very well said, I remember when the government could only make people criminals, now Microsoft can make their own laws specifically against those who liberate software

Ive used both quite a bit and the only prob Linux has is that it lacks in hardware compatabillity, linux is way more customizable and i would still used it if it supported my modem

dude, you can't even have virtual desktops on windows...i don't play games so don't have much need for a wintendo partition...however, i do use windows under linux using win4lin 4.0(no directx or usb support)...been using it since 3.0. it lets me run office, photoshop(although i prefer gimp), winmx, etc. all under linux. there is a formidable learning curve for config'n everything but it's all worth it when your machine has dual os power. windows doesn't have dctc(hard core file leeching(sharing) app, mplayer, galeon, and blackbox. oh yeah, i got an old patched up version of blackbox running on slackware 8.1...iz groovy

alot of this thread makes me laugh.
linux is good, unix is good.
windows is good
all of them are good , so long as you arent a total idiot and can keep your system configured properly.
i ran freebsd , using blackbox. it ran great, was easy to install, but had none of the gaming suport i needed. so i went back to windows.
if you want to turn on your computer and point and click through evernyhing like a mindless zombie, it isnt going to happen on nix. it takes a little bit of patince and learning to beable to do even simple things on linux and unix. but once you get it all going and know the basics, its wonderfull.
but its still my opinion that one isnt any better than the other. it all depends on the person, the computers hardware, and how much time you want to actuly stick into setting up and maintaning a stable and easy to use computer, including OS.
none of my computers crash anymore, you know, ive had more crashes with windows me and 98 than with anything else. but now that i know what the hell im doing, nothing crashes anymore.
the BIG thing about a computers stability , CAN be the hardware itself. dont buy sheap parts, and you will have less problems. take time to read some instructions, and you will have less problems.
if your going to own a computer, learn how to use it correctly. again, you will have less problems.
