I want a friggin' answer, dammit!!!
    #1202108 - 01/08/03 09:00 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

How long is 'NOW'?

now ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nou) adv.
1. At the present time: goods now on sale; the now aging dictator.
2. At once; immediately: Stop now.
3. In the immediate past; very recently: left the room just now.
4. At this point in the series of events; then: The ship was now listing to port.
5. At times; sometimes: now hot, now cold.
6. Nowadays.
7. In these circumstances; as things are: Now we won't be able to stay.
8. a. Used to introduce a command, reproof, or request: Now pay attention.
b. Used to indicate a change of subject or to preface a remark: Now, let's get down to work.

Sorry, I want ONE answer... none of this vague crap.
I want a measurement... minutes, seconds, days, months, nanoseconds, I don't care what units.... I just want an answer by consensus.

And have it on my desk by Thursday 5:00pm EST. Thanks.

Is your lack of sleep affecting your reading comprehension ability there, Shroomism?

No.
Now cannot be measured. It is always right now. Therefore it is the eternal moment. So if you want to slap a label on it, then it is every second, every day.

So if you want to slap a label on it, then it is every second, every day.

Now isn't forever if it was yesterday. I'll allow that Now shifts, but I want the EXACT range (units, please) for Now. If you can't answer how I'd like, then no further reply is necessary... in fact, it would be excessive.

Thanks.

Yesterday was the now the past. Tommorow is the now of the future. Yet we are always living in RIGHT NOW, and always will.
You are asking to put a measurement on something that is eternal. That is impossible. 1 second, 500 billion years, it's all right now.

I don't think there is a "now". The future and past join seamlessly.

Now is the eternal fusion of the past and the future, for without now, there would be no past and no future.
In numbers now would most likely be beyond Planks Length, so therefore would be immeasurable without the presence of a black hole.

It's simple. NOW is a CONCEPT, it's not a length, it's not a thing. Like the "point" in geometry. A point doesn't have a radius, width or anything. It's an abstract concept. So is NOW.

We could debate this forever. And to answer this, I believe that we first need to establish that Time exists!

I don't think there is a measurement for "now".

It's like asking what the size of a point is.

Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

Now is not a "length" of time, it cannot be measured. Mathematically, an infinitely small measurement would be 1 / infinity (seconds, hours, years, whatever...)

So a moment is the inverse of eternity, but we can't comprehend eternity, so we can't comprehend the moment.

Well said Solidox. Confusing abstract concepts with reality will just lead to big headaches and silly convoluted arguements me thinks!

Now is what you experience. Just an abstract concept.

Abidhamma (Abidharma) Buddhist Philosophy breaks the 'now' down into 'mind-moments.' I can't get into my library at 'this moment' because my Lady's daughter is sleeping there, but there is a division into something like nanoseconds, without using that term of course. Nevertheless, between the 'pearls' of mind-moments on the 'string of time' is the 'matrix' or background Reality which is Sunyata - the Void. Not mere absence, but the Eternal Primordial Cosmic Reality that underlies the phenomenal world of space-time. Total Awareness is the nature of Sunyata, and dwelling between the mind-moments is to have attained Omniscience in some Buddhist terminology. It is [figuratively] like each mind-moment, or thought-bubble is the size of the Earth and Moon, and one is suspended in space between them, with lots of void to separate the usually perceived continuity of thoughts - each like a pearl on a string of pearls.

In Transcendental Meditation, thoughts were conceived of as bubbles rising from and expanding out of the Source of thoughts called Creative Intelligence. Through meditation, one sought to plumb the depths of mind to enter Creative Intelligence in its essential nature, before it gave rise to individual thoughts.

Both models has one withdraw one's identification with the modifications of Pure Mind, or thoughts, and identify with the Ground, background, matrix, or whatever you want to call the Eternal Reality that underlies the phenomenal world. Reality is always the Eternal, which is why the phenomenal world (samsara, creation) is sometimes referred to as being illusory. If you are attempting to locate a core reality to the 'now,' you will have to pierce the veil of illusion, and locate the underlying Source, which is Eternity, not time. Why don't you read 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle, or listen to the book on tape which is even a better format?
