Incubation in Cooler
    #12014905 - 02/12/10 10:27 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

So I inoculated my jars 2 weeks ago, and they seem to be... I'd say... the most colonized jar is 15 % done. Some are going much slower than others. I expected a longer colonization time due to the room temperature being around 61-63 f. I've decided I want to try to raise the temperature of the jars a little to perhaps encourage better growth. Would simply putting the jars together in a small cooler be adequate to raise the temperature at least a little? Would wrapping/covering the jars with something be a better bet? There are 6 jars.

Also, I've heard it can get too humid and wet the dry verm barrier, but I'll stay vigilant and watch for this problem.

I'll buy a heater when I get the chance, but for now I'd like to see what I can do with what I have. Would this at least raise the temperature of my jars a few degrees?

Well the mycelium in the jars puts off heat it's self, and the dead airspace is what allows things to heat up. Try this experiment, take the cooler and put a thermometer in there leave it for a few hours. Then take your jars put them in there and check the thermometer after a day.
Bet you it'll be warmer.

:goodluck:

Yeah, I agree.
But I'll just have to trust the theory, I also don't have a thermometer. As you may notice, I'm a cheap bastard... :smirk:

But in any case, I was planning on comparing the growth speed after 24 hours, as I've been checking quite often and have an idea of how fast the jars are colonizing. At this rate I'd be waiting a month, maybe more... Hopefully the cooler will do the trick.

I'll post back once I have the comparison. Advice is appreciated though, I'm always open to improvements.

I was driving to class today, hands freezing due to the cold steering wheel of my car, and that gave me an idea...

Handwarmers. I'm gonna throw one or two in the cooler. What do you think?

Or you can put a jar of warm water in there, not too hot and not touching the jars, and replace it once or twice a day.

UPDATE:

Well, it looks like the combination of hand warmers and cooler is definitely working. The jars are exploding with rizomorphic growth!
