I belive you can spray a h2o/h2o2 solution on them with out doing much harm, don't take my word for it though, I haven't been able to do this first hand yet...

lol i froze mine with some "clean safe" dust remover for key boards. i froze the green mold and the cobweb, the cake is still fucked but maybe it will help some and kill some MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! this may be useful for getting those small contams without fucking over your whole cake. its a controlled freeze.

thanks guys, but i'm thinking antibiotics, not peroxide. the latest issue of mushworld reports on trichoderma incidence being greatly reduced by mixing certain antibiotics in the substrate, prior to pasteurization. also, the agar i get contains antibiotics. so, i'm looking for something easily available in the u.s., soluble in water + any suggestions from those who have experimented with this.

Antibiotics kill( or slow down growth of) bacteria. Bacterial infections are seldom a problem on a casing.

thank you, anno, but i'm a bit confused. i'm having probls with green stuff, which i thought was trichoderma, and then i saw the article on this very latest issue of mushworld, reporting on the success in fighting/preventing/reducing trichoderma by mixing certain antibiotics in the substrate

what u could do is do experiemnts man. get some antibiotics and grow some green stuff or whatever and see it kills teh growth. i dont think it will matter if they are soluble or not just shake it up and spray. like those banana flavored antibiotics u got back as a kid dam those were good. hhaha anyway. thinks thats your best bet and is more fun. unless u want to read about all the kidns of antibiotics and what kinds of infextions they are good for. just my thoughts man

You have stumbled upon one of the problems with contamination and salvage. Just because something looks green does not mean that it is trich. Macroscopic identification of microbes is nearly impossible, except for a few cases. We tend to assume that everything green is this and everything blue is that because this and that are the most commonly seen... this can be a deadly mistake.
If you get contamination, toss it. Don't bother trying to save it, or identify it, or play with it, or salavage it, or grow outside with it, or ... Very seldom will you grow something that can kill you, or make you so sick you wish you were dead... but Death doesn't play best two out of three (very often). When you get contamination, cut your losses and start over... why volunteer to play the part of a lab rat?

Someone a few weeks back suggested using that anti-bacterial gel for hands called purell of something like that. It's for cleaning your hands when you can't wash them.
It's not an antibiotic but it could help. I am pretty sure it is just gelled alcohol.
Try searching for gel or alcohol to find the post.
