Whether you reg'd for the Shroomery when you were 11 and are still at the teenage angst phase of punching holes in your wall (like me) or you were moving furniture, such as a shabby recliner or an unhinged door and dented / put a three foot wide hole in your dry wall...
let us discuss dry wall repair here.
Personally, I like the mesh net + putty + paint tek. But larger jobs require an actual piece of drywall.
Pics to follow.
Discuss your tek.

3 foot hole would require new drywall haha.
i think it always looks spiffy if you cut out the damaged area, leaving a square shape, then just pop in some new drywall with patching compound. after it dries up, sand it down, add more to level the thing, resand, and paint.

If the hole is somewhere where it will not be banged into, I usually just get an old piece of drywall that fits in the hole, put a screw through it to use as a type of handle. Put putty on the piece of drywall to be used as a patch, use the screw to pull it to the inside of the wall and let dry. You then just fill in the hole.

stick a chunk of wood, drywall.. something in the hole, sometimes a little bit of insulation does the trick, fill with drywall mud, tape it, wipe it down, coat it, sand it down with a hand sander, spray it with a small compressor, you need a hopper, spraygun and mix up the spray mud right, and try to knock it down looking as even as possible using a knockdown blade, and paint it.

for holes bigger than a few inches that have no stud available for support i always use this method.
slide a piece of wood into the hole and (with drywall screws) screw it into place on the sides. you now cut your new piece to fit and screw it in(you could also just cut/smooth the hole into a square shape for simplicity). be sure all of your screws dent into the drywall a little. plaster over the screws and seam. dry, sand, paint over. using this method there is no risk of the hole resurrecting. this kind of method is especially useful for pesky door knob holes(in which case you should probably go and get a door stopper anyways.) you also dont have to wait for a big thick glob of plaster to dry/crack/fall out.

make you a thick ball of cement and smash it into the hole, then smooth it out, then use some spray on plaster in a can, and paint

Two pieces of wood, one at the top and one at the bottom would be better.

That's nice I've always used a similar method cutting an oversized piece of cardboard, fold it to fit through the hole. Put a hole in the cenetr of the cardboard and run a string tied to a small piece of wood (such as a pencil). Use the string to hold the cardboard flat against the inside of the hole and fill. Cut the string and sand when dry. Same thing, different method.

Nowhere near as strong.

Exactly what I do, except first I cut a square of new drywall (bigger than the hole) then place this over the hole and trace it out.
Then cut out a nice clean hole in the wall the will pefectly fit your new peice that you cut.
screw that into the wood and mud/tape/mud ! and finish!
