Incubation
    #1201167 - 01/08/03 03:09 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I read both the PF tek and the MMGG.  I have a few simple questions on some different methods between the two...
1. Should I expose the incubating jars to light?  Or keep them in complete darkness...

2. Should I incubate them at room temp (70degrees) or about 80degrees...(is this a better    method to initiate pinning?

3. Should I retape the holes after innoculation...

4. Lids tight or loose during steaming? Should they be tightened during incubation?

By the way..I'm inoculating 3 jars of B+ and three jars of Eq.

Thanks for the pointers...!!!!!!!!!

all of these questions are answered in the faq and many many many times if you were to do a thing called SEARCHING on this forum. ah well, i never do this so I'll be nice this one time.

1. darkness (search for reasons WHY)
2. 85 degrees is optimum (search for more info, mycelium can produce it's own heat)
3. If you like (search for reasons why or why not, or maybe when you should untape them)
4. neither (search damnit!!!) tight b4 sterilization and you won't get them off after.

1. A little light wouldnt hurt but try not to check them but every few days.
2. I like to leave my incubator at 86 on the dot. Best temp from charts i read
3. i retape my holes. some think the mycelium needs to breath and use filers and stuff. I just leave a dry verm layer on the top of my jars. Then u can leave it loose or even remove the lid after 80% or if it stalls.
4. nc

Oh yeah, to your question about pinning.
U can give the cakes a few hours a light a day
lower temp to 74 for best fruiting time.
give it some fresh air(fan it and shit)

good luck

wow, really? it's covered in TMC a few times. I've read several posts concerning it too. How does it do it? How does your body do it? The decomposing of sugars/proteins is exothermic. Stamets warns about not cramping substrate jars and providing good airflow so they don't overheat. It's also the same reason you don't make your substrate layer too deep. In fact, he graphs very specific depth to temperature ratios.
