Is this going to fruit or what? (PICS)
    #12009648 - 02/11/10 02:37 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Okay, now I'm worried for my bulk tray...

Its been 3 weeks now since the initial colonization.  It was left colonizing for 6 days and then put into fruiting conditions since then.  It has been in the same terrarium as my cakes that have grown quite well, however I have yet to see even one pin on this giant cake!

It is pasteurized horse manure inoculated with 2 BRF cakes.  Is it possible that the mycelium network is still forming?  It gets sprayed and fanned 3-4 times a day because it is underneath my BRF cakes.  Do these tray ever just completely stall?

Yeah, co2 is heavier than air, so all those cakes that are producing co2 are shitting it right on top of that tub and it doesn't have anywhere to go.  Just my guess.  The holes look a bit high up too so the fanning is good but these circumstances are a bit different than norm so maybe a bit more than 3-4 fans or maybe just get another FC...

maybe but co2 could be pooling in that tray since it has no holes near the sub  how often do you fan

hmm... maybe I should birth the cake from the tray and dunk it for 24 hours, then place it on its own in the terrarium.  would this be wise?

dunk the tray, just fill it with water and put a weight on the sub. drain water 12-24 hrs later and that may do the trick

i doubt its CO2 as long as you fan properly

Okay, so I took it out of the FC, flipped it and took a few pics for you guys.  It feels very very moist on the bottom, and if I were to try and flip it back or pick it up, I'm pretty sure it would break in half as it feels very flimsy.  Should I dunk for 24hrs or let it dry?

Well, does the mycelium look completely formed?  I'm thinking maybe its too wet and it won't spread.  Unless it looks done to you guys...  If one more person chimes in I'll dunk.

horse manure taken from a dumpster at my buddy's farm.  Cooked it on the stove at 170 degrees F for an hour or so, drained it pretty damn dry, but still moist, then crumbled up two colonized BRF cakes and mixed them in and covered with foil for first 6 days.

Well if you could keep us informed. I have thought about doing the same thing before. If i understand you correctly you want to flip it over and fruit it like a cake. I am not advising you to do that, but if you do, I would like to see some pics of your results. Cakes do good that way, I cant see why you couldn't do a bulk that way. But I'm not speaking from experience. But i have wondered about it allot. I mean some folks don't even use a casing layer, so whats the difference?

Ok here we go!  I dunked the bulk cake for 18 hours, ditched the tray and put it in the SGFC covered with a thin layer of vermiculate.  THEN placed my cakes that are still fruiting on top of it and to the sides.  Anyone think this is crazy?

I'd say ,you're good ,as long as you fan often to remove excess co2,and maybee use toothpicks stuck in sub on one end and cakes raised up of the sub stuck on the other end(just an idea,)That would give you the most possible surface area.Or for god sakes ,get a small tub for the cakes.I think you are complicating things, beings that you are already having some trouble fruiting the big "cake".

That will be just the right amount of time to get you're first flush pulled.Depending on how long you are away, you may have some company to welcome you home.We want pics when that big sub has flushed at maturity as a back drop for the fruiting cakes.........good shit, gotta see this.Good job.5 to 8 times a day is more than alot of people can get to their set up,and have good results, just remember ,you're co2 is going to be a major factor w/ that set up ya got there.Set up a fan facing away from that area, but keep it kinda close for turbulent air currents in you're absence.

Growing out of the cake?  or the half-pints you mean?

Well I used 3 different strains for my jars, B+, creeper, and golden teacher.  If you're talking about the bulk cake, I used two half pint jars which may have been diff because I lost track of which were which

I'd get a light misting in the center of that big sub,you have all side pinning,at least from the pics.If you would have just kept it in it's original tray,....then put the whole tray in w/ the chop sticks and cakes on top, that would have kept the side pinning to a minimum. But hay, would've should've , could've right ?????

Haha I'm just happy to be growing magic mushrooms period!  Before I learned that spores were legal I would have had no idea any normal person could do this in the comfort of their own home, and during the winter no less :mushroom2:

And yeah I suppose the flush is pretty small compared to some monotubs I've seen, but the 20-30 mushrooms I have growing are getting pretty fat thankfully.  After I harvest I'm taking a vaca and probably going to dunk the cake again and see if I have anything growing when I come back a week later.

Well the day has finally come!  I harvested close to 30 of the biggest mushrooms I've ever seen up close and personal before in my life!  And its all thanks to the shroomery community and their kind words of wisdom :thumbup::mushroom2::heart:

Here's the pics!

Thanks again!  Nows its time for a little vaca, nothin but sand, ocean, fresh air... and mushrooms :mushroom2:

Peace!
