My First Casing!
    #1200632 - 01/08/03 11:02 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I made my first casing about 15 minutes ago. It is about 60/40 verm/coir. It is in a aluminum baking pan and I used 1 and a half pints of PF cake. The strain is Thai, can't remember which one. The nice smell of mushrooms was wonderful. Can't wait till the real deal .

I have a few questions though. Do I need air exchange when it is colonizing, or kust when I am initializing pins? Also when should I check on it? I don't want to invite a bunch of contams in, but I don't want overlay or a dried out casing layer either.

Thanks for the help!

~Peace

You dont need good air exchange when yo uare letting the mycelium colonize the casing layer. Mist it well and then just put a top on your casings and store it away somewhere warm (preferabbly incubator) and check back on it in a week. And try not to let them get any light.

you want a little air exchange. if you covered the bin in foil, that should allow enough air in. if you covered in plastic wrap, you may want to poke a few holes in it. i wouldn't bother checking them for at least 3 to 5 days.

I just put the covers of the trays on and put them in my dawer for a week. But I know with bulk substrates you must have holes poked in the lid or whatever.

you should poke two holes in the cover of the casings while they are colonizing and then keep them in the incubator. I would let it sit in the incubator for like 3 days then check it and make sure everything is ok. It will probably take 5-7 days for the casings to be ready to pin/fruit.

You should check the casing layer at least once day.
Some strains will over colonize the casing layer if you don't.

Never wait a week to check a colonizing casing layer!~

my first casings was showing mycelium on day 2 then put in the terrarium on day 4. I would open the casin and fan like a fruiting chamber but only once a day.

Me, poke 8 holes, check every two days, 5 to 7 days of incubation depending on strain. Mist heavy after incubation.

Thanks guys, I think I'll check them every other day. How do I know when to stop patching and when to start pinning?

Thanks Road, I have some SA jars that I am going to case.

Do you know the answer to my question?

This question > "How do I know when to stop patching and when to start pinning?"

I hardly ever have to patch.
I usually get lucky and have the mycelium evenly colonize the casing layer.
I think the key is having an even substrate layer and putting down an even casing layer.

When I do patch... I just patch the heavy mycelium spots that come up through the casing layer.

Basically when you have the mycelium coming up nice and even...fruit the son of a biotch.
Don't let the mycelium colonize too much of the casing layer.

LOL, A friend has some creepers he cased last night. He put 3 1/2 pint cakes in each 9" x 12" casing. I'm gonna have to tell him to keep an eye on it cuz I heard they colonize fast as hell.
