The Mycelium Rescue Mission!
    #1200621 - 01/08/03 12:59 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hello All,

Some updates on my allen casing! It's gone to hell! It had green mold colonizing everywhere, overtaking the mycelium!

I did some researching and realized how stupid of mistakes me and my friend made with this casing!

We used both a perlite humidification method along with too much misting... then to top it all off there was the magic growing media cased in the middle with my mycelium jars, but it proved to be a better breeding ground for this green mold since my humidity was extremely too high!

I knew there were still some good solid chunks of mycelium in the terrarium because some of it was starting to fluff up pretty strong!

So I thought I would do a rescue mission!

I went into the casing to get as much of the solid mycelium chunks that I could, while cleaning it of all green mold if there was any growing around the edges of the chunk!

I took these rescued mycelium chunks and cased them ala SOS tek! Using those solo cups. I think since I put the mycelium in a casing mix that is least likely to support contams, I think I should still get some good fruits out of these allen jars!

Do you guys see anything wrong with what I did! Do you think I saved a complete loss of mycelium due to the green mold in the terrarium? Do you think this SOS casing will work even though the mycelium chunks might have the tiniest green mold spore on them, i think the mycelium will kill any contams in this new casing enviroment!

Let me know if you've tried a rescue mission of this sort, and what the turn out was!

Gthirteens!

Good job. I fudged up like that my first time. Also I would recomend you dip a small amount of mycelium in hydrogen peroxide and then put it into a jar of sterilized honey water. This will assure that you have an isolate for your next grow.

Oh I see what your saying, will a jar of sterilized honey preserve a chunk of mycelium? For how long?

I was wondering myself how I could just keep using chunks of mycelium to start my jars from now on instead of starting from the spore again!

Have you tried preserving chunks of mycelium like this? in sterilized honey?

Cool idea SixC

No the honey wont preserve it, the mycelium will start colonizing! Will give you enough colonized honey water for several syringes.

No problem man, just happy to help out a fellow mushroom grower.

its not a preservation method  . But! its a culture technique. the mycelium cultures the honey and grows mycelium water, you can put cleaned sharpened glass inside to break it up once it starts growing. to preserve or store this solution you want to put it in the refrigerator, that is after it has somewhat culture the honey. there are lots of varying teks on this simillar idea.
