Score free wood chips and dust
    #12005305 - 02/10/10 09:02 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I went to a local cabinet maker and he gave me a huge trash bag full of hickory, Oak and I think some popular. He was glad to have me take it. I told the guy that I would give him a mushroom block when it was time. He was way cool about it. -MYK

It seemed only fair to give some of the fruits back to him. I told him I would give him a block and he could mist it and watch the mushrooms grow. Maybe it could be an ongoing thing.

When I went in there I asked him if he liked mushrooms and he took pause for a moment and then said yeah what kind do you have? He had a poster of Zappa on the wall from his younger days. I think this has the potential to turn into a freindship. -MYK

Not such a great score. I soaked and mycobagged some of the free chips. When soaking they smelled really nice I thought I recognized the scent. After I took the bags out of the pressure cooker there was a resinous substance in the PC sticky and brown. It smelt like cedar. When got the chips I asked the guy if there was cedar in the bags and he told me no, well that was not true. Now my PC stinks and the jar rings are getting this nasty brown residue and they are sticky.

I didn't recognize the wood to begin with because I was too hopeful and the wood types were mixed so I got confusing smells. I guess I should have known better. Any suggestions on what to do with two mycobags of great smelling cedar? How about cleaning my PC? -MYK

If the cabinet shop has a vacuum system for multiple machines or if he is sweeping off the the floor you may not have an isolated species of wood chips, not to mentions most commercial building building materials are treated . If he uses melamine, plywood, or MDF anywhere in his shop I wouldn't consider that a safe source of wood. Best bet is nursery's or chip it up your self.

i got mine from a local " tree surgery" place
when i told the guy i would give him a shroom block or mushrooms from the wood he gave me he said
"there's no way im eating homegrown mushrooms"
but he was still happy to have me take as many garbage cans and bags as i could fill.

The home grown mushroom thing is funny. My friends wont eat mine either, but they will go buy some strange powder from some sketchy raver kid down in the ghetto with no second thoughts. Or people that eat them straight off the pie, but not off a cake. Cool with me. I prefer tripping alone.

I think I will have some great path making material but I won't use it for MR. If this guy told me there was no cedar in the bags and there was a shit load, who knows what else he will tell me or not tell me. I think I will still take him a shiitake block because that is what I said I would do. Maybe after that I will be able to specify what chips he collects for me. I don't want to think it is a lost cause yet. -MYK

Cedar does have a fairly unique smell, but I have only seen cedar cabinets only once in a high end ski cabin in Alpental. I have built quite a few custom homes and have seen all types but not really cedar.
Maybe it was not actually cedar???
Or, does he make furniture also, if so that would be more likely but still not that commmon. Cedar is more common in our region than other places but still rather expensive and not that hard... Maybe just ask the guy:wink:

BUT! I forgot to add like AmoJuanKenobi stated, if (which he propably does) use a bunch of laminated products make sure none of the glues are mixed into that dust, they are all "known carcinogens" (Sp?) Good luck either way.

That's fucked up dude.  My friends are all lining up to hang out after I have a harvest, there's always more than I can eat.

If the guy makes chest or clothing cabnits thats where the ceder probaly comes from, It keeps out moths. But the guy got a Frank record, makes him a friend of mine. Use the ceder mycobags as inscense or something its nice and lights on fire real well.
