First 2 jars could have been too wet or too dry. Jars 3 and 4 may not have been completely sterile or the syringe was dirty. Do you flame your syringe red hot between jars? Keep your figers crossed for jars 5 and 6. Sometimes these guys can surprise you.------------------ Be sure to check out www.3mshrooms.homestead.com for your spore needs

OK. Maybe the wet ar dry problem was it. I'l buy it, but I'm not using a syringe, I'm using a print, which I scraped with a wire I heated until red-hot, then let cool. I think I have another thing which could have lead to this though...I had accidentally unplugged the heater the night before, and there was a huge temp drop. The jars were fine at night, and all the sudden in the morn, they were contamed, I will bet that's what it was... I guess I just have to cross my fingers for the final two, or maybe the others with halted growth will start again.------------------ Away!

If you didn't use a syringe, how did you innoculate your jars without a huge risk of contamination? I would really like to hear the answer to this one. You aren't really using the MMGG if you didnt innoculate your jars with a syringe. You also said in an earlier post, if I recall correctly, that you used perlite instead of vermiculite in your jars, which is also a deviation from the MMGG.? Well, I did do one thing different, and that was what you said, I used a print instead of a syringe. I did have to briefly open the jar and scrape a few spores in. But the perlite thang was an experiment, which I though wasnt going so well, but has the best myc growth out of all my jars. I am now hearing of a way to use baking soda or lime to kill green mold. ------------------ Away!

if you opened the jar to scrape in part of the spore print then you gave airborne contaminants an easy way in. To introduce your spores to the substrate this way means that you also didn't have a layer of vermiculite on top. That's another way that you didn't follow the MMGG and another good way to introduce contaminants. I suggest the next time you attempt to grow that you follow the tek. The MMGG has a detailed explanation of how to put your spore print into a syringe so that you can innoculate without introducing all of the contaminants that you did.
