Railroad Earth
    #12002680 - 02/10/10 02:00 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Had never given them a listen until this slow, snowy afternoon...And I am loving them!  Really great pickin', lots of instruments, rich sound and soulful lyrics.

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Oh man!
They get down!
:aweoverdose:

They are one of the main reasons I want to go to Wakarusa this year!

I found out about them by looking at the Wakarusa lineup (which is awesome).

They are coming to a bluegrass festival in my state in May...might have to check it out.

I've heard them a few times at various festies, I never remember what they sound like cause they aren't really my type of music, but they are still fun to listen to.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear they're NJ-based.

If I was a Boss or Bon Jovi fan I would argue with your statement...but I am not so

they have all kinds of killer songs dude. plus they can take you wayyyy out there if they want. I always looked at RRE as kinda whiney, rainbows and unicorns type of bluegrass. Same with HBR. some of my favorites of the top of my head though? Dawns Early Light, Snow On the Pines, King Ebenezer, Holding, 2hits, Out of the Blue. Actually they performed out of the blue on craig ferguson a month ago.

Nice dude!  You should def. check them out.  This may be sacrilegious, but a couple of their songs have had subtle instrumental things that reminded me of the Dead, and I think their lead vocalist sometimes channels Jerry a little bit in his style.

Good stuff, I love bluegrass.  Some others you might want to check out, might have heard of some of them:

Old Crow Medicine Show
Chatham County Line
The Devil Makes Three
The Avett Brothers
Madolin Orange
Iron Horse - they cover Metallica and it's amazing

--------------------
Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

lol, they are on fire right now and playing tighter than they ever have. Cabin Fever tour has been sick so far from what I can tell. Totally making up for last year when adams girl was sick. Ben and Adam switched places in the lineup. Something about Adam not being able to hear himself over the banjo sometimes. I like how effortless he makes slaying the guitar look too. He closes his eyes most of the time...

ok I just read some of the posts here.

I just wanna say after hearing a fuck-ton of live performances that bands have their "on" days and their "off" days.

so don't do this rre<yonder mountain.  That's complete crap because while that may be true for the limitedly few times you saw them under some particular circumstances, it is definitely not true all the time.

Disco Biscuits is a band that I heard a bunch of time and I really believed they sucked ass.  One day they blew my mind.  The next time they blew it again.  Same with Galactic, idk what the fuck they were doing before but I just wasn't listening to the same thing they were playing now.

I've heard bands that I follow have shitty nights too.  I've accepted that people, just like bands, can have their down times.

Bottom line, stop the music smugness and come back to earth.  If you have a sample size of 1 (n=1), then that is not enough. collect more data before you make a conclusion.

Apples and oranges really... RRE is just too girly for me, sorry I hurt your feelings and all ok? I didn't mean to get anyone all bent out of shape. Disco Biscuits are pretty good. Not really though. Unless you are watching from the moon. Which is always fun, no matter where you are. :pipesmoke:

you didn't hurt my feelings, but whenever you wanna come down from that neighboring galaxy just let us all know.

It is ok.

yeah its all good music (not counting the biscuts  )

and everyone has there own tastes

i def see what you maen about RRE being more girly. they are a much more earthy and spiritualy inclined bamd than yonder. wh is much more about straight up good time drunkin hoedowns.

i would say yonder may be a bit over manly for me

yonder just does not hit the same musical peaks. tho they can get pretty spacy and what not. its kinda jus tliek they are vamping around with some effects on. nothing really surprising

i will say that RRE has put on some soso shows that iv been to where nothign really erupts into any eic momentum

but shit when they start soaring its unreal.

i find it interesting that most all of RRE songs are wrighten down by oe of there managers, durring jam sessions, tod, the guitar dude. just kinda freestyles them out and commits none of them to memory. and over time, there manager wrights down what she "thinks" the lyrics are and the solidify it into a song for an album or whuthave you. some of RRE songs change drasticly over the course of the years. from lyrics to the song title. thats why alot of RRE earth lyrics cant be found anywhere

That's actually really cool!
That's a really neat way to make songs.
