Has anyone used the petco brand wbs
    #11995506 - 02/09/10 01:24 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

it's like $8 for 40lbs... If so, how the hell do you clean this shit... it's the dustiest shit I've ever seen.... it's like the raked the shit up from a baseball field or something...  I had to rinse 12 cups of seed for almost 30 minutes straight to get the water to be semi-clean.

Seems like you have the right idea.. Just rinse until the water comes off clear..

I've used it for a very long time with good results, even tried other kinds and went back to it. I like it cause it holds moisture well. However I also hate it because it's a pain in the ass to prep but easier grains didn't work as well for me as this did. All I do is soak it for 24 hours and try to remove all the sunflower seeds as soon as I add the water. I haven't had much problem with it being a little dirty. You gotta really rinse it well to get some of the dusty shit off that's in there but it will come out. If some of it stays though it doesn't seem to negatively effect your jars just a little messy.

Also after rinsing it and letting all the water drip off that you can it's a good idea to dump the bird seed on a towel and let it sit for an hour or 2 to dry up just a little bit or the grain will be to wet.

yeah, it doesn't have much sunflower seed in it at all... but it's super dusty... when I open the bag it flies out...  so you just soak for 24 an go? ... I let mine soak for 48 last time and I've had a few jars do nothing, so maybe I let it soak to long.

I think I have the same one, bought a 25 lb for 7 bucks or something. I rinsed it about 6 times before the first soak, let it sit for 4 hours then rinsed it again until the water ran clear, then left it over night and rinsed it again in the morning before simmering it.

This is 40 for 8..  this stuff wasn't clean after about 20 rinses... so probably different.

Brutal, tell me more about your grow.  What else are you mixing with the WBS? What's your FC like?

I bought a bag from Petsmart called Bird Basics. I forget price, 12.00 maybe. Milo is first ingredient, white millet, cracked corn, black oil sunflower. Its very clean, not full of broken pieces and tons of weed seeds. A coarse screen strainer works for getting the small weed seeds, underdeveloped and broken pieces of lesser quality mixes that act the same as exploded grains better than rinsing cause the waters surface tension and crevices between seed hangs on to the small stuff. It only takes moments in the coarse screen. Then rinse. IME anyways. Oh by the way that dust? Think spores.

That's why I washed it for 30 minutes, if not more... time kind of got a way from me... could of been closer to an hour, for 12 cups of WBS...  I think I may try bird basics next... I still got a shitload of this, that I need to use first though... how much did you get for $12?

Its a 40lb bag. It was 12 bucks or less, cheap enough. No need to screen it. Red white and blue nylon  grain bag. Same thing Iraqis use for shopping bags. They sew on a handle and some flowers and its one tough, big bag.

BUMPFor 2 Reasons.
1.  Bullshit, in Oregon, the 40lb bag costs $10
2.  This bird seed, even though it has shit i don't want like Corn, also has an added ingredient.
    -Calcium Carbonate aka lime

well originally i was thinking of gypsum (/sulfate), but is that good? does it fuck with the pH?

Are you referring to the Petco brand? I brought up the Petmart(brand: bird basics) seed. I checked the bag, no mention of calcium carbonate. Many people have used the Petco brand. I wonder what your enhanced brands ph is. I wonder what mine is. I do not have litmus paper but I have a liquid test kit. I will put some in neutral ph water to soak for a bit.
