Wow, rare post.
A+ on your actions.
Surprised they didn't kick your door in at 5am the next morning, shoot your dog, strip-search your kids, and cause irreparable damage to your home.
...Damn, I'm really losing faith in this police state.

where do you live? in a lot of places in texas they laugh at your rights when you bring them up. My friend that got busted for the hash told the cops he plead the 5th and they all started laughing and decided to stick everything on him, even though the hash was in the trunk and found ditched nearby(they didnt see him actually ditch it).Not most places but some such as my hometown/county where he got busted.
I know its possible to be arrested for not providing ID under "interfering with an investigation" or a charge along those lines. You met some nice cops

live in cali, yes i,ve heard your supposed to show them id if they ask but maybe not if your just walking somewhere and not causing a problem they did ask if i had weed which they said they dont care about they were both a couple of white dudes and i,m white as well so that might have made a difference, sounds fucked up but that is the reality i get lots of warnings as well for speeding , been stopped probably over 7 times and have only got 1 ticket...and that was from a latino cop in arizona , little latino with a badge and a gun is a nightmare scenario...

Sounds like things went as well as could be expected. Now that you've seen it work, be sure to use it again, and again.

No, you have to identify yourself. That means name and address. You don't have to tell them anything other than that. No SS# or any other bullshit is required.

Yep. Any time you let them search it gives them an excuse to detain and harass you. I've seen them take common objects they find through a search and then accuse you of stealing them. Then they ask you where you got them and detain you until they verify it.
Example: They find a library book in your bag. Then they say there's been a lot of library books stolen recently. They ask to see your library card. Then they call the library to check if the book was properly checked out.
They did this with me once... late at night I had some tools in my bag. I just wanted to get out of there so I showed them what I had (note I didn't let them search I just showed them). Then they said there had been a lot of tools stolen recently in the area. Asked where I had gotten them. I said I had borrowed them from a friend. They wanted his name and number. I gave his name and address, but didn't give a number since I didn't want him called at 3am. They actually went to his house and woke him, his wife, and his daughter up beating on his door. Then they did their standard bullshit of asking if he had borrowed anything to anyone recently, etc., etc.. Then they had the balls to ask him where HE had gotten the tools. And this was all for some standard shit like a $25 socket set and a few other cheap and common tools. I ended up detained for over an hour in the cold late at night. And my friend was pretty pissed too.

Oh... I should point out the moral of the story is don't let them search and don't offer ANYTHING.
If they ask what's in the bag say "personal effects". If they ask where you're going say "That way" (point direction they already know you were going). Anything else say "I have nothing further to say to you" or "my lawyer has advised me to NEVER make ANY statement to the police under ANY circumstances". Followed by "Are you detaining me or am I free to go?"

Sounds like you got some decent cops, for the most part I take the attitude that the cops are basically there to protect and help. I'm well aware of the crooked cops out there (authority inherently corrupts) but I've just been polite and haven't had any real problems. Except when I was smoking a joint in the car (bad idea) and got pulled over by K9 cops. They dug through my car for over an hour, didn't actually find my pot (!), but found a tiny speck I didn't know I had under my car seat. They through it out and told me to quit smoking weed. I still felt violated, but given the fact that me and my car reaked of pot and the dog hit on it, I gave the cop the keys. Should I have asked to see a warrant first?

Nah, they don't need a warrant for cars. Just probable cause. Which they had since the car smelled like weed.
The weed smell everywhere probably confused the dog so he couldn't pinpoint it.
In the future only smoke at home.
Or if you are one of those people that drives more safely stoned than while sober, use a hitter and altoids. But that is a DUI risk, you are better off just smoking at home.
