Wispy myc or mold?
    #11983761 - 02/07/10 06:29 PM (14 years, 11 days ago)

I had what I thought was cube myc growing from PE spores put on agar 6 days ago.  When I was making a transfer in my glove box tonight I realized what I thought was cube myc looked kind of wispy.  I finished the transfer and took it out into open air to get a better look without the obstruction of the glove box plastic.  It was very wispy looking, but totally white.  Growth the size of nickels but no smell of mushroom myc really.  Took pictures but they are indiscernable.

Since it was a dispensable dish at this point, I poured H202 into it to see if it was cobweb.  The H202 didn't do anything to it so it isn't cobweb I guess.  I have had trich a couple times on agar and everytime the green spores show up a day or 2 after the white growth, but this white growth has been growing for about 3 days now and doesnt seem to be trich yet.  Are there other molds that start out white that might look like cube myc other than trich?

Ok since I haven't received a response yet, I figured I would add some more detail that might help me get help from someone.  I hope I am not asking something that has been brought up ad nauseum, but I have searched and cannot find an answer.

All of this white growth started right from the spores.  It has grown at a speed I would consider normal for cube myc.  It still has not revealed itself as trich, or any other mold in that it is still totally white, and is not yet sporulating.  When I look really closely, I can see the threadlike growth of whatever kind of myc it is, but it is not thick strands of threadlike rhizo growth I am used to seeing with cube myc.  It looks similar in pattern, but the threads of growth are much thinner than that of cube myc.  That is why I used the term wispy originally.
