will my experiment work? *pics*
    #1195536 - 01/06/03 04:18 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

so i got bored, but i didn't have any wheat straw laying around. luckily i've read that some people like the guys at www.mushmush.com case their rye spawn without spawning it into a substrate like straw, they just case it. i quickly whipped a casing consisting of materials at hand (60/40 vermiculite/coconut block and popped it in the microwave. my spawn is 1 quart of fully mycelianated birdseed. the plan: mix the spawn with a small amount of Jiffy Mix Plus, the fertilized kind (also nuked) and case it with the coco/verm mix. incubate and wait. as you can probably see the only "experimental" aspect of this project is stirring in some jiffy mix Plus with the spawn.

will this work? any ideas? i'll keep you updated on the progress...

It will work,, but the water retaining properties of bird seed are a bit limited, by adding straw, you add mass/weight and water retention etc...

you might end up with smaller and less flushes that's all i can think of.

if u case the rye grains directly, you give less nutrients therefore smaller shrooms. i am sayin, that if you use dung or straw once, you never want to do otherwise lol

You can use practically any grain spawn as a fruiting substrate when working with cubensis. This is in the FAQ. Jiffy mix, vermiculite, and coco are all casing layers, they add no nutritent value to the mixture, and your fruits will be using the birdseed. Jiffy+ is normally for plants, I doubt it will add any useable nutrients for mycellium, so no - it will not replace a bulk substrate.

I hope this answered your question, as you are obviously lazy to read the FAQ.

you might just aswell add coarse verm or similar instead of jiffy+. the only benefit i can see is that it will add aeration and structure to the substrate like it does when used in sawdust blocks. i don't believe it will do a whole lot nutritionaly. hope this helped a little.

Jiffy Mix Plus is a fertilized soil mix. it rates .09-.05-.09. it contains slow release fertilizer and it is ph balanced. is fertilizer not a complex of nutrients? don't mushrooms need nutrients? if you rat bastards would read my original post you would see that i am NOT asking if i can case plain birdseed, i'm asking if you think the fertilized jiffy mix will work, provide nutrients, etc...the question is about the jiffy mix.....

so far the tray is colonizing nicely as the mycelia spreads to cover the bottom of the sterilite container. i'll report more as it progresses.

for the curious a list of ingredients:

Canadian sphagum peat, horticultural vermiculite, slow release fertilizer, lime, and a wetting agent.

Some pictures for your viewing edification...

Quarts and pints living in harmony...

A closer look at a quart jar...

the mycelia is creeping into the Jiffy Mix Plus. It should reach the casing layer soon...

a closer look..

Anyone know what this yellow liquid is?

the whole thing is reminiscent of the "i grew cubes on cardboard" argument.

the idea being that the spawn (grains) has enough nutritional momentum to colonize other non-nutritive substrates and fruit from them solely by virtue of the food stored in the grains...
you can get cubensis to fruit off of just about any porous surface that holds moisture and is open.  potting soils fall into this category.
the nutritional requirements for plants and fungus are decidedly different.  your argument (and attitude) about the fertilizers in your jiffy-mix doesn't hold as much water as your casing does.

my two cents.
oh. and you didn't know what that yellow liquid was?  no wonder.
