always wondered where the PER in peroxide came from... seems like it would be dihydrogen dioxide (actually that isn't incorrect) so what is up with calling it hydrogen peroxide?

the per comes from the addition of one oxygen molecule to an otherwise "stable" oxide. Na2O is sodium oxide. Na2O2 is sodium peroxide.

oxygen is an atom, not a molecule. if adding an additional atom (O3) what is the new prefix (IOW, does PER always indicate "2"?)? if the O2 part was stable would it then be considered an oxide? IOW, does PER indicate instability?

"oxygen is an atom, not a molecule"

yes, that's right. my mistake.

here is a definition of peroxide: "A compound containing oxygen in the -1 oxidation state. Metal peroxides contain the peroxide ion, O22"

i think that this is saying that peroxide means the addition of an oxygen atom to create a -1 charge on the molecule. but i'm not a real chemist; i only play one on tv ;-)

seems yall are on to my plan. this is cool to trick people with. "did you know the chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide kills thousands of people every year. makes many more sick because its not always pure, and causes billions of dollars of real estate damage. it has ruined lives. join our group to help illegalize it"

heres the scoop. water is the simplest neutral substance. the charge on the hydrogen and the charge on the oxygen cancel out. thus, water is the simplest most stable molecule. a peroxide is just when you add another oxygen molecule. when you throw another oxygen into the picture, you throw the charge off, but not by much, so its a little unstable. (disinfectant properties, but not flammable)

when you have h20, theres hydrogen and oxygen. adding another oxygen will make the hydrogen the constant, and the peroxide of this molecule will be named after the constant. thus you have hydrogen peroxide.
