After reading all of these responses I'm definately leaning towards the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

Thanks for all the replys everybody.

It probally does have some relevance, but that particular example just didn't "speak" to me.

apologies.
i'm new to expressing sarcasm and humor without tone of voice, so that may have sounded hostile. i was actually only trying to find out what the offending part of my post was so that, if necessary, i could attempt to clarify any clumsily stated opinions.

again, apologies. more discretion will be used in future posts. i hope :frown:

peace out

i think the whole is usually greater than the sum of the parts.
simple example- fractions 1/3 is .3333333 with repeating threes on into infinity,
add up 3 thirds(1) and you find the sum of .333333x3 is .99999 on into infinity, so,
when the parts come together they  round up to 1, an almost neglectable round up, but an undeniable one.
another quick one- a global ecological system, alone, each species is unique, beautiful, and priceless, the sum of all these parts is an increidable amount, but the way they all come togethe, all reliant upon each other/keeping each other in balance, makes their sum much more than incredible, it makes the sum divine.

peace out. :smirk:

1/3 is 0.3repeating. so 3/3 is 0.9 repeating. which, in the world of functions and calculus, is going forever towards one, but never becoming one. so 3/3 which reduces into 1, does not equal 1. 1 doesnt equal one. FUCKIN WEIRD MAN. and that is why i'm takin calculus honors, even though i'm the worst student in the world :-)

yea man. math is weird as hell, heh

my math teacher once taught us this:

the integral of e to the power of the x is equal to the function of u to the power of n.

he wrote it on the board and it looks like this
x n
Se = f(u)

math teachers are fuckin bizarre, lol

Things get weird when you approach infinity. (1/3) * 3 = 1, (0.333...) with 3 repeating is not equal to 1/3..it's slightly less. Our computers, and pencils, can not make it equal to 1/3 because of real limitations.

0.9repeating is 1 tho because in functions, if it is goign towards 1, it becomes one. 0.9 repeating does go towards one. 3/3 is reduced into 1/1, which is one. 1/3 is 0.3repeating in functions, because 0.3repeating goes towards 1/3 (which i cant express with mathematical symbols, lol)

Quote:

Yeah, anything that has to do with the derivative of e is going to be weird because the derivative of e is e...it gets strange too.

well, thats true, but what i meant was sex=fun. the s is the integral, followed by e to the x, equals the function sign of u to the n :-) my math teacher knew what he was talkin bout!
