Psilocybe azurescens questions
    #11980576 - 02/07/10 09:19 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I have been interested in growing Psilocybe azurescens or cyanescens. What kind of substrates would you recommend and do you think that sacrificing the level of domestication that has gone into cubensis strains for the potency of azurescens or cyanescens? Do they grow as fast and fruit as much, or is it a big trade off. And, which of the non-cube species would you recommend? Are they a lot more tempermental than cubes?

Azures grow on what Ive heard alder wood chips, but you want to get a Liquid culture to start it for more reliable growth.

Ive never seen anyone on here have a bulk Azure grow, but whos to say it isnt possible...It takes a little more time than cubes though...

Azures are more potent than cubes, Azures have been said to be THE most potent mushroom.

If you are looking for a lot of mushrooms though just grow some cubes, and have a side project of Azures.

Psilocybe azurescens and Ps. cyanescens are both cold- and wood loving mushrooms. They're mainly found on hard wood patches (preferably fresh hard wood chips).

You can easily cultivate mycelium from prints, just like you do it with Psilocybe cubensis. Take a look here.
To fruit, they require -as already said- wood chips, as well as constantly low to moderate temperatures between 40F to 60F.

The difficulty to grow them, is actually not given. They are quiet easy. You most likely need to do it outdoors though, unless you can provide the required circumstances, which most can't. A fridge with a see-through door is an option for example.
You won't be able to bring them to fruit, when you try using the same condition as for Cubes!

Both, Azures, as well as Cyans are far more potent than Cubes.

Did you experienced anything like this with Cubes?

Im currently colonizing a batch of azures. They are from a wild Oregon strain. I was hesitant to use PF tek in 1/2 pint jars, but i found a great guide to follow:

http://www.shroomery.org/8673/Erics-Guide-To-Cultivating-Psilocybe-Azurescens-Cyanescens

I didnt follow this exactly, but it is a good baseline for Azures. They colonize well at 70-75 degrees in the jars. I have noticed that they are much faster growing than cubensis, and more hearty than most strains. They LOVE alder wood sawdust/chips. I used alder wood sawdust and organic wheat bran substrate for my jars(3 parts alder to 1 part wheat bran).

Once colonized i placed a 1/4 inch 50/50 casing layer on the bottom of the tray, sliced the cakes about an inch thick, and put an inch layer of mixed alder 30% sawdust 70% chips (boiled for 15 min and soaked for several hours then strained) on top and covered unit i saw mycelium growing throughout the fresh wood (about 3 or 4 days). I then cased it with 2 inches of unsterilized/pasteurized forest floor (70% topsoil and the rest pine needles, leaves, and bark).

Because they are wild, cold is required to get them to fruit. I used a small fruiting chamber with 3 inches of perlite, and placed them outside for the daylight hours (currently mid 40-50 degree F range and 12 hours of light). They have been fruiting like crazy. Im on flush 3 now. They are truely my favorite critters.

The Pan Cyans are alot more delicate. I used a cow manure/verm/brf substrate. It seems to be working, but it is taking awhile. It has been about a month, and they havent fully colonized the jars yet. I used a modified dung PF tek to get going:

http://www.shroomery.org/8418/How-do-I-cultivate-Panaeolus-cyanescens

I highly recommend the Azures! Ill get some pics up soon...

The fact is, azures and p cyanescens are not indoor fruiting mushrooms.  Those who have succeeded including myself get two or three mushrooms for several months work.  It isn't worth it.  If you live in a temperate climate with long, cool, and wet fall weather, you can grow azures outdoors in a patch.  If your weather goes from hot to cold very fast, they are not suited for your area.  That's why they grow in coastal areas in which the weather changes from summer to fall slowly and with a lot of rainfall.  If you're outside these weather areas, find another species to grow.  Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

Good point RR. I live in the Pac NW, which is home to these critters, so i can lean on favorable climates outside to help me. Cyans prefer tropical climates, so the better you can simulate that, the more success you will have.

You talk of a different species. Psilocybe cyanescens are located in moderate climates, such in the PNW and require the same conditions, Azures do.

You're talking about Panaeolus cyanescens. They are completely different species.

Thanks Fahkface!

A little hard to tell by the pic, but yeah they do look like Azures. You will need to post some more info to be sure...

Since the pic is really bad, a proper ID can't be done looking at it.

Try to get your hands on a decent cam and take some more pictures.

It's probably superfluous, but since I've seen it so often: Don't eat any of them before you're 100% they are the real deal!

Once you made some proper pics, I will be able to tell weather they're Azures, or not.

Currently, they look more like a maybe a Hypholoma species to me. I can't really tell, though.

Where did you find them?

I found them in the puget sound area of wa. They were growing in some wood chips and leaves. I'll try to get better pics.

I'm pretty sure, that these ain't Psilocybe azurescens, nor any other kind of active Psilocybe species.

Take these pics, and make a post in here.

So out of personal experience what do you think these are? I'm waiting on a spore print right now, and the stems bruised almost black. They have a textured like stem as well.

Do you know anything about Hypholoma marginatum. I looked up some pics of these but I don't know if they were a reliable resource. I can't find any posative ID for these.
