Fraud does not disprove a phenomenon
    #11975406 - 02/06/10 01:26 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Yet the following confirmed frauds/misidentification were pointed to by tens of thousands to millions believers as very strong evidence of something strange:

Cottingsley Fairie photos

Lockness Monster silhouette

8mm Bigfoot footage

Marfa Lights

Gulf Breeze Sightings

Phoenix Lights

Crop Circles

Cattle Mutilations

Alien abductions/implants

Face on Mars

Sylvia Browne / John Edward / James Von Praahg

and many hundreds more.

No, this does not disprove paranormal/UFO phenomenon, but these were all at some point sited as BEST EVIDENCE by large groups of people!

These people/events/evidence were not minor players, but often the backbone of many beliefs. If best evidence fails, why should one look towards third or fourth best evidence?

Does the existence of dishonest businessmen make the existence of honest businessmen improbable?

If a large organization of business professionals point to CEO John Smith as the most honest businessman they know - and he turns out to be a major embezzler, then the rational conclusion is that the Smith believer's judgment was very poor or made major assumptions.

Same with all the paranormal followers and their pet phenomenon.

The gullibility of people and the deceptive manipulation of so-called gurus does not deny the validity of non-materialistic experiences.

Depends upon which type of experiences you're talking about; care to narrow the field a little?  Meditative and entheogenic experiences can induce feelings of absolute transcendence and Awareness... why not sober experiences too?

Mu list was to externally observable events. Why the sudden topic switch to internal events as somehow relevant?

Are you on drugs or summin'?

Internal events are very relevant to externally observable events as reality determines perception with our subjective reality tunnels.

But yeah, I'm pretty much :bobmarley:.

Ice cream can induce "feelings" too. What's your point? The brain is capable.
