Panaeolus africanus?
    #11973548 - 02/06/10 02:48 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I found these mid-summer growing in horse dung (added as fertilizer to flower beds) in the Eastern Cape coastal area, South Africa. Manured garden, rural area, but 'wild', indigenous Africa (plenty of elephant, buffalo etc) abounds in the adjacent game reserves and game farms around here. So, my guess is Panaeolus antillarum, but of course I’m hoping it is africanus!
Spore print black and appear to have the ‘typical mottled gills’ of Panaeolus species. Largest specimen in the photos has a cap 50mm across, stem 120mm long, straight, 5mm thick, more or less equal width, slightly widening at both ends. Stem off-white, somewhat creamy-pinkish coloured, quite firm, becoming tan-flesh-coloured when squashed, assuming the appearance and smell of latex. No blueing. (If i understand correctly Panaeolus africanus contains psilocybin but no psilocin, so it is weakly active even though it doesn't stain?) Stem is finely grooved. Fibrous inside, giving the appearance of long, clear hair running along its length. Stem bends when squashed, does not snap, although the foot breaks off more easily. Mature caps darkens to a mix of metallic grey, cream and off-white, becoming quite textured or scaly. The blackened gills on the mature cap, (broken up in photo) appear quite delicate and feathery as they are streaked with silvery lines.

Me in context: Inexperienced with gathering psilocybe or panaeolus.

Thanks!

fllute

Yeah, that seems to be the case. Though, I'm not sure if P. africanus bruises at all.

Got a microscope?

Probably Panaeolus antillarum.

Its nice to see some mushrooms from so far away, please post some more.

I can't recall anyone finding Panaeolus africanus recently.  Probably because we lack agents in Africa.  We need to recruit more.  You are just the man for the job & you're hired.

I'm from Zimbabwe, very new to mushroom hunting and anything shroomery. I feel like I'm breaking ground, hopefully the teachers find me here
