Gymnopolis? Milk Cap? help...
    #1195420 - 01/06/03 03:41 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

These were found on the coastal forrests bordering the pacific.
I?m going with Lactarius Deliciosus... but could be mistaken.

I?ve seen these from humbolt to san francisco.

Those look like Lactarius to me (except for the 2 little ones to the lower left in the first photo). I'm not sure I see the conspicuous green bruising that should occur if they are Lactarius deliciosus. There are spots where I think I see it but you should be able to verify the bruising with no effort. If they are not bruising an obvious green then they are another species, and none of the others (non green bruising) are especially recommended for eating. Lactarius deliciosus is actually a complex of species, but fortunately all of them are edible.

Some differences you can use to distinguish between Lactarius and Gymnopilus are:

Lactarius (mostly) grow on the ground under trees. Gymnopilus grow from dead wood (stumps, branches, buried roots, wood chips).

Lactarius are very brittle and will snap like chalk. Gymnopilus are more sturdy and, when broken, are fibrous.

Spore prints of Lactarius are white to cream colored. Gymnopilus spore prints are orangish.

When cut, the gills of Lactarius will often bleed "milk" (lac is Latin for milk). Gymnopilus won't bleed milk like fluid.

Most Lactarius will taste mild or peppery. Gymnopilus tend to taste bitter or nasty. (When tasting, don't swallow)

Lactarius mostly grow as individuals. Gymnopilus tend to grow in clusters from a common base.

Lactarius stems are usually (not always) hollow. Gymnopilus stems are solid.

Nice specimens and photos.

Happy mushrooming!

I'd go with your original assessment, but L. deliciosus have a more pink colored gills.

i find them somewhat bitter, unless cooked thoroughly and slowly....
