I'd like to hear from the newbies grwin gourmet shrooms?
Do ya find it more difficult than grwin cubies.....
what kinda yields did u get?
the process of start to end, what r ya opinions about it?
How eazy is it to convert from a cube grower to a gourmet grower...assuming the cube grwer had avg skills (at best) in his hobby???

Not to sure yet as a total newbie
but from the hunting point of
veiw great results in just 8 weeks
of starting ive found many edible
species that taste great,And have started a few
projects like geting wood piles ready
and building glove box,incuator ext
in prep of starting edibles.
So all i can say is try and see.
i'm hoping for at least one improved meal next year
(this year)Have a few tons of waste(Being a gardener)
That hope fully next year will become
Shiitake
Oyster
Stropharia rugosoannulata
Auricularia auricula(wood ears)
Flammulina velutipes
Can but try  seems easyer than P Cubensis

I think most varieties of oysters are much more forgiving than cubensis....but that's just my experience/opinion.
Also, an interesting way to start is to order some spawn from a biologicals supplier....and then you can get some fairly immediate and satisfying results from just expanding that using straw or what-have-you. Some folk get frustrated with having to go all the way from the agar plate through to fruiting the first time if things go wrong.

I am looking in to growing gourmet mushrooms. I have only tryed 3 strains of cubes. and have had okey turn outs. I am really getting in to this hobby, yet all I have tryed is BRF cakes. I have a few pounds of whole rye Grain. and I am going to try using this next. will this work or am I wasting my time? I dont have a green thumb at all. I have a feild with horses not far from here that I can get poo and hey from, would this be better to use starting out or should I try some thing else? I am sorry I jumped on your thread Bro. Is a culture part of a the cake or? I know stupid Q? I am learning and thank every body, peace

A culture is some mycelium on a petri dish normaly.
I think you can grow edibles on a lot of mediums.
Best to first try a few shop bought mushrooms and
find out what you like the taste of most then
do a search on that sort i.e Flammulina velutipes (enoki)
would be a good start ive seen a few grow logs here on them.
But if you really wont to try a few you,you cant go wrong buying

Actually for his question, I would better suggest Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, it will provide more species specific information. Though TMC is a must if you do not have every aspect of home mushroom cultivation down. It's a instant refresher course, if you do. I think both books are wonderful, I wouldn't trade them for anything.
To answer the question asked, I do not think there are any gourmet strains that are much easier than cubes. No. They all require a bit more work, as PF cakes have not been perfected for them all =)

I'm not a newbie but would like to add my piece:
Oysters are surprsisingly easy to cultivate on pasteurised straw. Small amount of straw can be easily pasteurised by putting it in a large bucket and covering it with boiling water. Drain after an hour and let cool in a clean spot. Inoculate with grain spawn and stuff into plastic bags. Puncture the bags and let them colonise. When colonisation is complete expost them to fruiting conditions. The tropical yellow and pink oysters fruit within 14 days after spawning!

Well thank you every one I am that much more smarter, now to get those pesky Books. What do people trade for to get spores or do you have to Buy, Or do I go with a cultre. I am going to try you tek or the tek I should say? I only have cubes to trade and thats cambos. I dont want to turn this in to a trade topic, so I apoligize to all those who get mad. Some of the sponsoring vendors sell culture syringes, and some sell culture plates too. I'm not aware of any selling prints.

thx for the reply every1.
I was hoping though to get more replies from newbz that are currently trying to grow them....
the only mushrooms i have eaten thus far are button, oysters, shiitake and portabello's. I luv
the taste of porties but detest their expensive prices. Therefore i would luv to dip my feet into
tryin to grw portabellos. However i get the feeling that getting a harvest from them will not be quick.
In fact i asssume that it would take several months (4-5) b4 they mature and r ready for picking.
The Mushroom cultivator????? Can some1 tell me how much that book cost?
I have lots of composted cow poo that i hope to use for grwin gourmets....but on avg, how long do u guyz think
it will take from start to end? And would using a 68L terrarium be suitable to fruit them in?
Well, im going to do some searches at google and see what it takes to grw gourmets?
if any1 has a good link to look at for newbz on how to get started, feel free to post it

update us or at least me so newbz like me can get an idea of waht it's like. We need like a support
group for us newbz who arent as gifted in shroom cultivation. Im like u, i had some avg success with cakes
(cubies) and a few bulk trays but nothing eye opening
However a few large portabellos would really make me happy, comparing it to yielding 8oz of dry cubies. **yayY**
I just dont like the fact at how long it takes to grow gourmets 
I just think that if one can learn how to grw gourmets, it will only help them get better at grwin cubes and vice versa....:):)
Also does any1 have any pointers to give....like needing to be extra careful at this stage or be careful
when u reach this point...what to look out for, where contam is at a greater risk, where not to
take shorts and where u can and what those short cuts are...etc....!

I picked up my copy of The Mushroom Cultivator for $34.95 at Borders. Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms is listed at Amazon.com right now for $31.50. When I was at Borders last night, they had it marked for $49.95. Two very good books.

I'm as newbie as they come lol
im growing portabello's now.But im
cheating and growing them from a kit.
Though i have saved some mycelium
from the kit thats doing well in a plastic
container in the incubator.
The kit i bought
has them growing on straw.Then cased
with what looks like peat based compost
with oyster shell.It came fully colonized and
only needed casing and watering from me.
But it looks like itll take 3 weeks till fruits apear
(acording to the instructions)then every 2 weeks
there should be a flush(up to 6 lushes)
So add the time the straw would take to colonized
maybe 2 or 3 weeks and it looks like you could get a crop
with in 6 weeks if things go well.

U awready have a headstart from a REAL newbie...like MOI!
Now did u buy the straw or did it come wth the kit? Thats prolly a stupid question LOL
Up to 6 flushes for that portabello? Wowwwww. how ya gonna store all of them..? I mean they can only last
so long in the fridge and im not too sure about drying gourmet mushrooms , how effective that would be?
why did u decide to use a kit and not do it from scratch?

I bought the kit as it was sitting there in
the garden center shouting "Buy me" lol
And was cheap
It came with straw in the bottom,fully colanized
by mycelium.With a bag of casing that just needed .25 L
of water added mixed and cased on top.Nice and simple
i didnt start from scratch as its only now that im
ready to work with agar plates.
Also eating them shouldnt be a problem as i have a large
family and my iguauna eats em
Also they flush about every 2 weeks i think.ill let you know.
Next step is oysters i hope

Yep, that definitely sounded very simple. Actually sounds like making brownies from a box...add some milk,
beat a few eggs in their, mix and throw in the oven....even a dummy can do that. Not to say ur a dummy of course 
Is agar plates easy, u find? never tried it myself!
Ur iguana eats porties???? Dammmn that thing eats like a king!!!! He's got one expensive diet there. I wish
i had that kinda money to feed my PET iguana gourmet shrooms HEHEHE
Next step is oysters??? Dont ya have it the other way around? I thought oysters were easier to grw than

Im just wondering here....that bag of casing mix that was included in the kit...could it also be used as a casing
material for cubies?
