Subjective Reality
    #989459 - 10/24/02 11:53 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Isn't it interesting how our science can so accurately predict so many things about the universe and reality? We know, without being able to visibly see, how atoms are composed, how the galaxies revolve around one another, etc. 600 years ago people knew with equal certainty that the earth was the center of the solar system. So how do I know that our science is real, and I'm not just imagining all this while tripping on large quantities of poisonous amanitas in a planar, terra-centric 15th century Earth where the sun does in fact revolve around the earth and dinosaur bones are illusions set forth by lucifer?

You don't, but it makes no difference, because science works.

You don't:

so..... 1.  You can figure out how the illusion works and make mad loot ($$$$)
or....  2.  You can figure out how to escape the illusion and become enlightened

either way, try to stay high and have fun

Science is no more real than words in a book are real. Science is simply a tool to help describe the observations we see every day.

I guess what I meant is not so much could science be an illusion, but could the relationships of physics that we observe and are able to harness actually be an illusion; how do I know that I'm not merely a schizophrenic in a 2-dimensional reality, in which Newtonian and Einsteinian definitions do not apply, and I'm just imagining that I live in a 3-dimensional mathematically based universe when in fact I live in a 2-dimensional universe that is governed by, say, thought?

Some years ago, many Christians believed that evolution contradicted the bible. Since dinosaur bones provide evidence for evolution, many Christians believed that they were either created by Satan to "trick" Christians into losing their faith, or that they were created by God to help test peoples' faith.

I have an ultra religious friend who believes the latter, since he believes that only God can create things. If God did create dinosaur bones to fool us, that's just another example of how uncool he is (imho), since he doesn't give any evidence of his existence to begin with. But like I said, most Christians don't believe evolution contradicts religion anymore, so this argument is going away (perhaps because the evidence for evolution is pretty damn strong).

The putative "evidence", as you call it, has more than one interpretation.

Evolution as a explanation for the existence of life on this planet is bunkum.

Iv'e heard christians who believed in both evolution and creation as two extremes and not as an interlocking synthesis of the two (they really never really thought about it). They would say in a conversation "....since we used to be monkies." and days later in conversation, go into creation and 'god'.

I think that's hallarious!

Is it all you want it to be?

Evolution as a explanation for the existence of life on this planet is bunkum.

Either the first lifeforms arose spontaneously somewhere in the universe or they were introduced to the universe by some entity of godlike power capable of creating life from inanimate matter. I see no third alternative.

Since new life forms make their appearance in the fossil record on a regular basis, they either appeared through some self-actuating modification of existing life forms (evolution) or The Creator is still busy designing and introducing new life forms to the universe.

I wouldn't have thought you were a creationist.

Nothing is an illusion unless you fail to see the reality of it. One of the worst errors in science is counting the dimensions. I like to think of it as an infinite web, that starts at a center (the first dimension_. There are infinites dimensions, that all start at one place, which is the first dimension (oneness). All dimensions spring forth from this. The Second dimension is sense (sight, sound/hearing, smell, touch, time, instinct etc.). The third dimension is our perception of reality (Which comes from our senses) The fourth is thought (Which springs forth from our preception of reality). You can go on outwards for ever, and there are countless version of each dimension level, but the a perfect state of being lies in the first dimensions (Zen).

Mr. Mushrooms, I'm curious. If you believe that evolution as an explanation of life on this planet is bunkum, do you believe that humans and dinosaurs coexisted at some point, or that humans were "introduced" to the planet much later?

Well, this Shroomery poll seems to support that most creationists believe in evolution:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/viewpoll.php?Cat=&Board=Forum11&Number=1186059&what=showflat&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1&poll=1041564603Shroomism

So far, 4 believe in Creationism alone, while 15 believe in both Creationism AND evolution.

We know, without being able to visibly see, how atoms are composed,

We don't know, we can only theorize.
