2 weeks and still no pinning - PICS -
    #6896977 - 05/10/07 08:31 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

well i made 2 rye casings and its been 2 weeks and they still havent pinned yet... the casing layer is 2 parts coir, 1 part vermiculite, heres the tek i followed...
http://www.shroomery.org/8432/From-syringe-to-print-using-rye
i dont think i was misting enough at first, but ive started to do it more in the last few days... ive kept the humidity at about 98%... 6500k light 12/12... i dont know what the problem is, take a look and tell me if you notice anything abnormal, should i of let the mycelium poke through a little more? do they look too dry? heres the pics

The substrate isn't fully colonized. They don't want to fruit from a partially colonized substrate. In addition, pressure cooking bulk substrate materials kills off beneficial organisms that not only fight molds, but also help to stimulate pinning. Even if it's 'named' a casing mix, 2 parts coir to one part verm is a substrate, not casing.

Substrates such as horse manure, cow manure, and coir should be pasteurized, and then covered with foil until full colonization prior to exposing to fruiting conditions. That's why you're two weeks into it without seeing anything.

It'll fruit fine, but take that polyfill out of those holes, and give it more fresh air. Fan it more as well.

It will start knotting soon, then, pinning. I made the same mistake first time around, but it turned out fine. Just not optimal.

hey that really suprises me. His casing looks fine to me.I thought that the casing should be colonised up to just under the surface, and his casings look as if theyve gone a bit further!
I'm at the same stage right now, and my casings are not as colonised as his (I have followed the same tek by magash) I'm waiting for pins but has been only 5 days or so.
Ive read in so many places in the forums that you initiate pinning when the myc is just under the surface and not covering, or fully colonising the casing (overlay)

As RR already said, you cased with a nutritious substrate.
So you basically added a substrate on top of the spawn.

You use casing layers to add and to maintain moisture at a substrate level.
You added a nutritious substrate on top of the spawn that will be colonized.

You're actually suppose to mix the substrate with the spawn in order to provide as many inoculation points as possible, so colonization will be as fast as possible.
The way you did it, colonization will take longer, which increases the chance for contams (contams like nutritious material better than non-nutritious material)

In addition the way you did it often results in overlay, which is why the mycelium that already poked through the surface should be patched with more substrate, so the rest of the mycelium has a chance to catch up, making the surface being colonized evenly.

verm and coco coir is nutritious!?!?
anyway in my case, I used verm, peat moss, and crushed oyster shell which I thought to be non nutritious

Coir is nutritious. There's speculations based on observation about the mushroom also consumes the verm, though.

This is not really about what is absolutely not nutritious, but what's more and less nutritious.
For mushrooms coir is nutritious.

Yea from what i had read  is that everytime there was more coir then anything else in the casing layer it overlayed or looked like what urs does....

I put a little coir right ontop of my substrate then  cased with mainly vermiculite, peatmoss, no coir in casing mix. casing incubation took 2 days and harvested all under a week

so peat moss is not nutritious to shrooms? compared to coir?

Coir is primarily used as a bulk sub,but w/ it's ability to retain moisture, airiness and not contaminate that quickly, some use it in casings, but I believe you are supposed to dilute the hell out of it w/ verm and or peat.By dilute I mean only a small coir to peat/verm ratio.

Ive been following magashs tek aswell
http://www.shroomery.org/8432/From-syringe-to-print-using-rye

Only using peat moss, verm and crushed oyster shell as I sais earlier...
only its been 10 days and no sign of pinning, so I thought I'd post a few pics to see what you guys think. basiclly a close up of the surface. Ive been fanning about 4-6 times a day, got 100 humidity and around 23 celcius at the bottom of the tub. Its near a window and has no direct sunlight.misting lightly once a day otherwise casing seems to dry out alittle. probably a waiting game. just its been like that since I uncovered and took out of incubator. oh yes and this is not a martha setup.

From what I see, you have relatively few holes in your FC. You need as much FAE as possible. So you probably want to drill some more holes in your FC's, in order to allow more fresh air to flow.
If you can maintain a proper RH, I'd get rid of the polyfill.
In addition, you use perlite in the tub (last pics) as well.

theres one hole which is the handle on the tub which is about 15 by 4cm, around the top of the tub though, the other hole on the other side I blocked otherwise the RH wasnt high enough. I havent any other holes so no polyfill either. And these are expanded clay pellets which work quite well, I have 99RH (not100 as I said earlier thats a mistake)
do you think I should use perlite seeing that the humidity is fine, (and perlite dust is a bit toxic)?
