Cakes not totally covered
    #1195168 - 01/06/03 04:05 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I was just wonderin if when a cake colonizes does the mycelium actually have to cover the part of the cake where the vermiculite was on? Because i have cakes that are covered on all sides except where the vermiculite was, i took them out and put them in my fruiting chamber anyway, i just didnt see how the mycelium could colonize with vermiculite on top.

Thats just the verm barrier. It doesn't have to be colonized at all. Some people decide when they birth that they want to knock all that verm off, others leave it on. Either way, it doesn't have to show any mycelial growth, its just there to guard against contams.

Are you talking about the top layer used for an airblock against airborn contams? You dont put any brf in it, u just put it on top of the cake thats in the jar right? Well if so, that will never colonize. Its a good shoe to put your cake on when you birth them, but thats abou it.

If you have some good healthy strong mycelium it actually will colonzie the verm barrier. I have seen it with my own two eyes!

I was gonna say

My jars have little bits of mycellium poking out of the innoculation points, so I prosume the verm has been colonised a bit

So is it actually supposed to completely cover the brf that is under the vermiculite layer, cause if so i think i fucked up.

A friend just birthed 8 creeper jars and they completely colonized the vermiculite barrier at the top.
