Newbie Errors!
    #11940246 - 02/01/10 04:14 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

OK it seems that when sterilizing BRF jars it is not ideal to cover the holes with electrical tape. It would seem that the use of a breathable tape would be ideal. What occurred after boiling jars for 90 mins. and letting them cool as I was inoculating the first jar the needle pierced the electrical tape and unleashed gasses. As I proceeded with the second jar, the hot needle pierced into the tape but this time, as the needle had penetrated the jar more, the jar formed a vacuum and sucked in 6cc of inoculant from the syringe into the jar in a matter of one second. OK so now that one 1/2 pint jar has 6cc of inoculant will it still colonize? Any suggestions? Is there any saving of this much inoculant being placed in one 1/2 pint jar? Thanks for any help.

Try micropore tape from your local pharmacy, or an aluminum foil cover.  If your canning jars have two part lids, I believe you can just use a square of tyvek in place of the flat round lid.  Tighten the threaded collar over the tyvek square to lock it in place.  This will serve as a filtered gas exchange, which is what your last jars were lacking.

Oh yeah and to answer the rest of your question, theres probably nothing you can do about the spore solution in the jars.  Try to use a little less in the rest of your jars, maybe 1/2cc, to stretch the syringe a little farther.  The water content in the one jar will probably be too high but you might as well wait n see.  When the syringe is empty you could try to suck some of the water out.  No sweat though, soon you will have more spores then you know what to do with.

It may colonize, or it may just contaminate from being too wet.  Now you know, next time use just foil or micropore tape.  Also, turn your lids rubber side up next time to prevent a tight seal from occurring.

ok sir couple things i say.

you could put a couple coffee filters between the ring and the seal

you could do the micropore tape

the best is the tyvek buy coverals from lowes for ten bucks it will last you years at a pf tek rate.

less spores are better i would say its fine though just be patient and dont exspect to succeed everytime.

Coffee filters are allegedly worthless.  I've never witnessed it myself, but those with microscopes claim the pores on coffee filters are much larger than the smallest contaminate we might encounter.  If you're going to apply a filter, use either tyvek or polyfil.  You don't have to though, micropore tape or nothing work just fine as long as you're sterile.

Hell it doesn't matter with these jars. They all got the green in'em after 2 weeks. Boo! Oh well... next time!

It is kinda funny to think about. Or at least if I picture myself saying, careful.... careful..... and bam it sucked almost all your syringe. I personally like to go lid, tyvek, ring and micropore tape on the holes, but I'm a noobie too.
At least you have the common sense to ask about too much liquid. I was so excited after my first LC produced I knocked up all the jars I could and made a quart jar with like 10cc thinking, oh yeah this will colonize super fast with all this liquid mycelium. GREEN within a week.:smirk: Live and learn.

Happened to me the first time around, and the third actually also.  Try again.
