In search of the mossyest place on earth
    #11940010 - 02/01/10 02:14 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I have a bit of a thing for moss. I love it. I want to feel it under my feet. Id love to be able to walk out my backdoor and walk barefoot on a bed of moss.

What would be some candidates for mossyest place one earth?
Alaska, Iceland, Oregon, Washington, Norway, Netherlands, Germany and Ireland come to mind but where else?

Seems like you got it covered man... The only other places I can think of might be less temprate rainforest & more tropic.... But I'm not so sure if species of bryophytes are as prolific in those eco-systems...

P.S. Isn't moss fucking great? I love the way it looks, feels, smells, grows... Just EVERYTHING about it... Here in Oregon there is a place on the foot heels of Wy'east (Mt. Hood) called Old Maid Flats... The moss is so thick there that I straight up slept on it under the stars & was comfortable... Heaven... Great place if you love moss.

I think the mossiest place I've seen was the Hoh Rain Forest on Washington States Olympic Peninsula.  Seemed like the whole place was draped in moss.

Agreed on the Hoh.  How far have any of you guys hiked?  A few years ago, the Mrs and I went from the parking area/trailhead at the end of the road, all the way around to Olympic hot springs and then back to the ranger station on olympic hot springs road where we had our other car stashed.  We took two weeks, but could have done it in a lot less.

Washington is pretty fuckin mossy. Moss grows in between the cracks of the pavement all over the place, and ALL over the trees.

Chilean Patagonia, on the west cost.
I was actually just reading a national geographic on it.

Quote:

It's safe to say that the interior regions of most of the protected areas along the fjords of Chilean Patagonia-- Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, Katalalixar National Reserve, Las Guaitecas National Reserve, Laguna San Rafael National Park-- are still utterly unknown. The forests are impassable, the footing knee-deep in moss and other low plants growing on a dense weave of brances and roots. [...] The general wetness of these half-submerged islands quite surpasses all ordinary experience.

Something about the fact that it takes the brunt of the westerly winds over the southern oceans [in the roaring forties], coupled with the fact it rains/snows nearly year round, and it's remoteness should add up to lotsa moss. It's sounds like an amazing place to visit regardless.

I also recall hiking through a forest of pine trees in the central Nepal Himalaya, where everything was draped in moss. Was a really powerful place.

That last one is the fairchild oak at Bulow Creek State Park. I love hugging that tree.

I've heard many great stories about people making the mistake to wipe with moss on the ground in FL.
