I have some pf cakes which are kept at good temperature 80+ ... but they don't colonize all that fast... i heard whole grain colonize faster 1week+ ... what is the nutritional difference between pf and it... and why are whole grains better for spawning the pf...

well some people claim to have about 8 or 9 days for grains but otheres usually see around 2 weeks for full colonization. this is so because each grain becomes and innoculation point. real nice stuff but requires a 15psi pc.

You can shake up grain so it's easier to distribute the mycelium around, and making growth a lot faster.

I have a few jars of cambodians on birdseed that are about 95% colonized after 6 days.

That is nice but you could at least tell us what tek you use, or what you use for inoculation, or the temp in your incubator..... Peace BC

What sized jars? How did you inoculate, if multispore, how many cc did you inject, and was it a home made syringe, or vendor bought?
I'm just curious because those are great results.

Sorry about that. Soak birdseed for 12-36 hours, rinse and strain birdseed, load into 1 pint jars and pc for 80 minutes at 10psi(my pressure cooker is a 4qt mirro that only goes upto 10psi). I used multispore innoculation at 2cc's per jar of Cambodian from TLG. My incubator ranges from 84-88 degrees. I also have some B+ going from TLG, and some creeper from a print I won in a contest going that I used the same tek for. The B+ is 4 days old and going a lot slower and the creeper is 3 days old and starting to colonize pretty well. This is my first time using birdseed and all I have to say is I'll never go back to BRF/Verm cakes.

Exactly! I only use birdseed and Rye Grain. Hella faster colonization times, more spawn, better inoculation points....etc. etc. etc.
Congrats on your first birdseed not going bad on you!

I made up so many jars because I figured my first batch of birdseed would go bad on me, but so far none have. I don't know what I'm going to do with them all. I think one of the reasons I've had good luck is the fact the I use lysol obsessively. I also scrub my hole work area down with alcohol then peroxide before doing any kind of work.

Well keeping things clean is important....but I think it came down to your birdseed tek that you used. Water content and such makes a huge difference.
Just make large casings with your jars.
good luck!

I've had B+ in BRF 100% colonize in 4 days, and i've had the same strain in BRF colonize in 20 days, I've had Eqs colonize rye grass seed in 8 days, and I've had the same colonize rye in 18.

Check out the FAQ and look for fractional sterilization. I just recommend buying a PC though, you can usually get them pretty cheap. I got mine for $17 on sale at Meijer. Lots of big super stores like Wal-mart, K-mart, and Meijer will have small pressure cookers that cost about $20.
