I've heard spent coffee, never just out of a can.

I've also heard of weak coffee (liquid) being used instead of water, or in addition to water.

take your coffe and put it in a coffe filter.  then suspend it via like another filter or something. Then run boiling water over it like a billion times. not a billion times but a bunch of times. like 5. this is to pull out all the acidy thingys and caffine. it also kills some bacteria that might be present. then just add this to your coir or manure or whatever. It colonizes fine. Iv heard gypsum will help buffer the PH and prevent contamination.
I find that bulk growing is very forgiving. Good luck

Just pasteurize it - at least 160 F for a couple hours will do it.

Peace

I added a pinch of unused toffee to a jar and nothing after 22 days, I think it killed them.

i mix it into my bulk mix.. which usually consists of 1 quart coir.. 1 quart horse manure.. 1 cup gypsum 2 cups coffee grounds 1 cup vermiculite... then i pasteurize the whole mix.. so i guess the short answer would be yes

i always pasteurize but once... thats not to say you must do it like i do.. rather ive never needed to do it twice.. i always welcome experimentation.. but i personally dont think youll need to do it more than once

just mix your sub up all together and pasteurize. coffee isn't super sensitive to contamination. the contamn issue comes when you try to collect your grounds and store them.
