I've experienced quite a bit of trouble with grass seed for strain A of the mexicana. What grass seed is ideal? I know rygrass seed...but annual? could someone please post a link to a site where i can order something that will actually work?
many thanks,

What kind of trouble? Grass seed is grass seed. Annual rye grass is the cheapest and least likely to be chemically treated (to keep it cheap) so that is the one recommended.
Mexicana A will form sclerotia on virtually any grain (birdseed, wheat, rye, rice, etc) and even BRF cakes. Grass seed is traditional and tends to give somewhat better yields than other grains.

No darkness needed. I have only tried it invitro and not with birthed cakes. You should see sclerotia begin to form in 3 weeks and continue for about 3 months. The sclerotia forms as white lumps of tissue that ages brown as it matures between the glass and the cake. The vermiculite tends to stick to the sclerotia and is difficult to remove.

Keep the substrate loose and airy as possible. This will encourage sclerotia formation throughout the substrate and will improve yields.
