This is sort of like a convenience/laziness issue, not whether or not the kit sucks. I mean, you can buy a prepackaged  kit that does okay for 5 times as much as something you can easily make that does an awesome job.
Kind of like, you can walk to the 7/11 and buy a 12 pack of some nasty beer for 1/4 of the price of a 12 pack of nasty beer delivered to your house, except the beer is the same and the grow kits probably don't yield as much as diys
