icic. i'd much rather have a smoke-able form, but if the pods work better might as well just use those

hell if you can get away with it, would scoring the pods and gathering latex to dry decrease the potency of the pods for tea later?
or could you get the best of both worlds?

It becomes illegal if they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that your poppies are being cultivated for drugs. Plenty of old grannies all over the world grow poppies along with thousands of other ornamental flowers every year, and you don't see them getting locked up.

so score them, milk em for a couple of hot days and cut em? then just dry for the lean season and say you are trimming them to make the remaining blooms bigger, like in roses?

no, it becomes illegal when you plant the seeds, if you grow it even for
ornamental uses you're still in possession of a schedule II narcotic it
includes the poppy pods and the stems, there's no need for reasonable
doubt and there's dozens of articles of people being arrested for
growing them

The seeds themselves don't contain any active alkaloids. Some folks have managed to wash residual plant latex off of the surface of the seeds, but that leaks out of the cell walls of the pod onto the seeds. It's variable how much of the good stuff you're going to get from them, which can be either unproductive or dangerous. IIRC some kid in Colorado overdosed on poppy seed tea a few years back.
