Psilocybe graveolens potency? * 1
    #11921096 - 01/28/10 10:06 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone have any information on this?  I realize it's a pretty rare species, but I figured someone on here would have some info, unless it's something that is still unknown to science.

wasn't the last confirmed collection made in like 1913?

I don't think you're going to be finding much info regarding this species unfortunately :/

Wikipedia has a photo from '09 for whatever that is worth.  I know, I know, it's wikipedia.

That photo may or may not be from the collection of the Shroomery member who found what appeared to be that species.

I didn't think that collection was ever confirmed as P. graveolens.

Seems like they are even more rare than I realized.

Let's put it this way: people who'd eat P. graveolens would also eat a dodo or a quagga.

Well I don't know.  I am thinking that they might be.  I need to spend more time with the microscope.

If you are hunting mushrooms to try to get high, looking for P. graveolens would be foolish.  Its an extremely rare species that only grows in crazy habitats.

You should probably look for Panaeolus cinctulus or maybe P. ovoideocystidiata.

Honestly, you are fucked and you aren't going to find shit.

I think Workman said that it was most likely Ps. graveolens. Probably a variant due to the slight discrepancies in cystidia size.

Read the thread here; Psilocybe graveolens.

Yea I am going to defer to his judgement on this one because my microscopy skills are crap and I don't really know.

Can't be as bad as mine. It takes me 5 or 6 gill mounts just to find cheilocystidia.

I'd assume Dishez's find was graveolens simply because of the habitat and macroscopic features. I mean, how many other Psilocybes are likely to inhabit the same place?

Dodo is so nice with a tart fruit sauce! seriously, is it possible to POSITIVELY identify the find as graveolens, or do more specimens need to be found? The original thread was full of excitement and a great expectation of a positive find but the microscopy work seems to have all but shut it down.

I think it definitely IS Psilocybe graveolens. There is not much documentation about this very rare species and so just because the microscopic traits aren't exactly what would be expected doesn't mean that they aren't P. graveolens. Maybe they are a variety. Just keep in mind that they haven't been seen in decades before this last find.

Whatever that mushroom was, is extremely rare regardless of it being ps graveolens or not. It may be an undocumented species.

I keep meaning to send more material to workman. Im convinced that it is graveolens though,  most everything aside from the cystidia point in that direction...well that and the lack of strong greening (which, according to Pecs description, doesnt always seem to be prominent).
I dont know about the potency...even if they were proven accurate, i wouldnt be eating any that Ive collected. You know how many of us pass up mushrooms growing in areas of questionable cleanliness? Well these are pretty much growing in toxic waste.

Meh that water didn't look so toxic to me.

All those plants growing around there is a good sign.

You should start to worry when there is NOTHING growing in the water.

I wouldn't trust anything that's growing even remotely close to a major river in NJ, especially the hackensack river.

If you're looking to hunt for mushies in the wild in NJ, I'd look for ovoideocystidiata.  But then again, they're pretty rare as well, at least as of last year, but apparently if you know where to look, they can be quite abundant.  I've yet to find them yet though.  Perhaps this year I'll have better luck.
