straw tek...how to keep contam free?
    #1192735 - 01/05/03 01:29 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

When your letting your straw strain and cool after pasteurization, and its in the pillow case can it pack up contams? Then when you put it in a Rubbermaid container or tray or something and spawn it with grain..Can't it get contamed while your doing that? Then it tells you to push it down...And then put plastic wrap over it...

Is it easy to contaminated? Whats the best/cheapest way of making sure your straw wont get contaminated?

If you pasteurize your straw correctly it won't contaminate very easily at all. I have had straw in a bin for over a week before inoculation without contams. Just make sure that the temperatures are on during the pasteurization and minimize exposure to air during cool down and spawning.
Compressing it is a good idea and will allow it to colonize much faster.
luck be with you.

I just did a number of searches on bleaching straw with no matches, do you have a link?

Use 1/2 cup of bleach for every 5 Gal. of water.Cut straw 3 to 6 in.Stuff in a bag and soak over night.Hang to drip dry,do not rince. It can be mixed with pasteurized dung or used alone.

Anyone else have experience with bleaching straw? I've always been skeptical of using bleach on anything that provides nutrients to my mushrooms.

make sure you have no rye or wheat heads on the straw, the berries would require pressure cooking to kill the mold spores inside. the leaves, roots, joints and fruits of the straw are all undesireable. 99% of the time contamination of trichoderma will begin in these parts. plain straw does not contaminate easily and acts as a rather selective bulk substrate.
when dealing with straw and contams remember, its better to cut away alot of substrate even for little infections. IE. the entire half of the cake even moderate discoloration occurs on. fighting mold is one of the most depressing and futile aspects of cultivation you never really win against an imfection, you just slow it down to get an additional flush or two if youre lucky.
some molds are toxic for example pennicillium.
ive had it infest a cake before. it takes the whole straw cake in about an hour and turns it to a blue-green skinned wretch. its EXTEMELY fast. however it is also highly visable and doesnt spread much beyond what you can see and is relitively easy to remove with minimal risk of future outbreaks.
green mold is just a bitch! its like the shadow of death. like getting cancer or aids to a cake.
you can cut it away and give it a blast of sanitizing agents. but for evry whiff of green you see, theres about 20 times as much white invisable matter below it spreading all over the cake and killing the fungus.
its like a virus between cakes and ravages them like cancer.
however unlike penicilium it spreads slowly.
dactyllium or cobweb mold is bad too and notoriously attacks casing layers.

so my advice is to cut all the little brown nubs off the straw and have no leaf or seed matter whatsoever.
the only grain present should be the master spawning medium.

The whole bleach thing has been covered a long time ago by hippie3,try a search for that users name. All the answers are there. Also i dont know if the seeds need to be removed but they never gave me any trouble.Make sure to use lots of spawn so contams wont have a chance to set in.

Alright thanks guys!

Could I use a rubbermaid container to fruit it in...Like use the container as one casing container.? And would the casing layer ontop provide enough humidity?

Or would it be best to use those foil baking pans...Just incase one got contaminated you wouldn't have to lose the whole thing. And you could use a Rubbermaid terriaum with a dish of perlite in it to provide humidity..

I add 1/5 cup of bleach per 5 gallons of water then pasteurize 160 degrees an hour or so. I also have stored my prepared straw hermtically in a cool space for a few days before innoculating with good results.

niggy, just go to the seafood department at superstore and ask for some fish-trays. they come with lids and stack really well. best of all they are free. you can also get them from fish and chip joints in wolfville and new-minas.

Yes use the whole rubbermaid. As long as you case it just spray every time it looks dry.Do not over water.Air exchange is what will give you the most trouble.Fan it out a lot. This is also when a growlight helps to raise humidity faster after aeration.

No rye or what heads...But Isn't there alot of this on straw? Can you buy bails somewhere that has just the stuff you want? Or do you have to sit there and pick away the wheat heads from the batch of straw?

Ralphster has wheat straw it's pretty clean of wheat heads I found 1 in the whole box. + a box is only a few bucks less than a 20 spot.
If you mix with dung you'll get quite a few runs out of one package and it's alot better than having to dig thru a big bale cutting off heads
