Blow Guns
    #11921789 - 01/29/10 12:19 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

So I've been looking into blow guns lately and here is what i've found.
Historically very common in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Americas for both hunting and warfare.
Ninja assassins in feudal Japan utilized bamboo blow guns for stealth and silent killing. :brucelee:
Pygmies use 'em, and certain native american tribes used 'em in North America, made from hollowed out reeds and other kinds of wood.
They were (and are) an absolute staple amongst Amazon tribes.
Amazon kids learn to shoot clay pebbles from them with deadly accuracy from an early age.
You can DIY fairly easily, and create fully functional and dangerous blow guns using natural or artificial materials; or a combination of both.
Also, there are a few companies who make quality products made from anodized aluminum, which feature foam grips, quivers, bell shape mouth piece, etc and come in lengths of 12", 24", 36", 48", 60", 72", and in 1, 2, and 3 detachable pieces for optional stow away advantages.
.40 caliber is most common and is recommended for most people; a good one to start with if you're a noob too.

There are a variety of darts made to go with these blow guns.
Wire, broadhead, spearhead, spikes, stunners, paintballs even.
A good setup can propel a dart up around 300-400 feet per second on average.
You can hunt prey with these things, you betcha.
Squirrel sized or smaller can be mortally wounded and harvested with an effective hit from the blow gun.
Head shots can take down larger prey i suppose.
Poision tipped darts will definitely take down large prey if done right.
This was common practice for amazons, pygmies, etc.
A lot of lethal poisons are regulated and not exactly legal for everyone to use how they please, especially for blow gun huntin' n killin', which is pretty much illegal except for taking out rats, starlings, and other pests like that.
With that said, I think a good made blow gun would make one hell of an effective weapon out in the woods.
With practice, and good aim you can take out small game up to 30-40 yards away.

I just picked up this blow gun right here.

It's 4 feet long, 2-piece so it breaks down to two 2 foot pieces for better packing ability (no more cumbersome than packing a fishing pole, really)
Once again, it is illegal to hunt with these things in most contexts, so I'm not endorsing it; just posing a hypothetical bush crafting scenario.

Fishing can be accomplished too.
Not the most effective way to catch fish though.
It is pretty decent for harvesting bait fish from the shallows, but otherwise, no so much :borat:

Who liketh the blow gun?
Anyone? :billymayshead:

i like to make my own from aluminum electrical conduit.

i make my darts from 1/4 inch wooden dowels, about 5 to 6 inches long.

split one end carefully, just enough to insert an Exacto knife blade coated with your favorite epoxy ( i like JB Weld, wood glue isn't strong enough for the impact when you shoot it). insert blade, and wrap the dowel around the split with a rubber band tightly wound and tied off. this will both brace it while drying, and give some flexible support on impact.

take cotton, or foam rubber or something similar and make a cylindrical plug at the other end, about half an inch long and the right size to slip down the conduit. it helps to coat the end of the dowel with something, i use JB Weld here too...this makes the plug stay in place better when you puff the dart out the blowgun.

wrap the plug with scotch clear tape to make it both smooth and tight.

allow to dry.

with these heavier and nastier darts, i can hit a phone book at half a block every time. the blade is big enough to actually hold a bit of dried toxin - something nice like puffer fish toxin will drop a ...well lots of things.

it's also a heavy enough dart that you can really hunt small game up to prairie dog size with no toxins - unlike a bit of piano wire, it does more than just pierce. i hate to have an animal run wounded...then i have to spend the time to track it down and finish it, which can be a pain with small animals.

i have one that size that breaks in 2 also.  camo too! i need to get more darts.  anybody know where to get em?

i just remembered from looking at those pics that when i was in the amazon in ecuador i bought a small wooden one like the big wooden ones they use, with the wood darts and gourd.  IDK if its everywhere but in that part they said they use wood for the darts and put cotton in a gourd(like in the pic) and wrap it around the wood at one end and lick it to get it even and stay on.  its a good way to make cheap easy disposable darts.  it has to be light wood though.

One of my buddies had a blow gun and a bunch of darts he got from a gun show. We'd set up cans & plastic bottles around the basement and shoot them.

One of his roommates discovered that one of his metals bowls fit perfectly in the end of the blowgun tube, and the long tube made one of the smoothest hitting pipes we ever smoked out of. But it didn't function to well as a blowgun after getting caked full of resin  :-)

it takes a little practice but i have killed allot of rabbits with a blow gun. hit it anywhere past the shoulder and it will drop deader than hell.

just practice to the point that you have a pattern the size of a rabbits head up to 15 yards and you will kill them.

hunt at night with a flash light and look for a single red eyeball about 2.5-4 inches above the ground.

i am practicing on a stuffed monkey toy about the size of my palm, pinned up to a styrofoam board.
I'm hitting dinner plates from 20 yards.
This shit is a lot of fun.

i have no personal experience with blow guns. do you guys think one of the darts in the first picture could penetrate a human skull? (i'm thinking zombies not murder)

Yes, it probably could if you used a spike.
A finishing nail with a stopper on it could be used in a pinch.
You'd want to file sharpen it probably.
It would penetrate even better if you cherried it and then pounded the tip flat on an anvil, then sharpen that into a point. Wallllah, spearhead, how ya feelin. Bam

Dude they're like 10-20 bucks.
All you need is a 10 spot and some loose change.
The darts and accessories can run you up the flag pole though.
I've spent triple the cost of the blowgun just on supplies for it.

It just depends on what your preferences are.
I like that site, they have a good selection and the best price on darts.
3 feet is good. I definitely wouldn't go any shorter than that.
You can buy couplings and extra lengths of aluminum barrels.
I can expand my 4 footer into a 6 footer for long distance shooting practice.
It can start to "flex" past this point, and the bore will not be straight... so i recommend setting it up like a turret, resting the barrel on a solid object that will hold it in place for a solid pivot point.
When I'm not using that 2 footer piece as an expansion, it also doubles as a 2 ft "back up" blowgun. Allz i needed to do that was an extra mouth piece and sight. (pistol grips work well for shorter barreled blowguns where your hand has to grip near barrel tip.

short answer: yes, i would recommend that black widow gun for getting started, definitely.
also, buy more darts than you think you need.
or learn to make them (piano wire, finish nails, bamboo skewers, etc"
Just get an extra bag of stoppers (the spike sized ones will fill onto a finish nail very nicely)
Happy blow gunning.
If you get bored shooting at birds and shit, get some exploding caps or .40 paint balls and hit the town. j/k

Sure.
Wire darts have good trajectory.
light weight, high carbon content so they still retain a lot of "hardness".
These come commercially as target darts, spearheads, and broadheads.
The broadheads are plastic and you melt-glue it onto the shaft.
Both spearheads and broadheads are intended to not only pierce, but to create a larger wounder; and in the case of broadheads, barbed so that it will remain in the wound even if the shaft breaks off.
Pretty sharp for a piece of plastic, though the tips break and become dull if you shoot them at hard surfaces.
The spikes and the pro darts (finish nail width, etc) are heavier and hit with much more impact.
The disadvantage with these is that they have a shorter firing range.
They will not maintain trajectory as well as a lighter dart, so you will need to learn these darts thru practice so that you can compensate for arc in it's trajectory.
Ummmmm.... blunts are good too.
The plastic ones are gargage. They will not stun an animal. But still lots of fun for certain functions.
You can ring someone's dinner bell from 30 yards away. Pretty cool.
The best blunts are stoppers with a little metal peice that screws in. Very effective. These will stun an animal if you hit em on the noggin.
Tourney darts are cool. They have plastic tips so you can use 'em on an electronic dart board. Also pretty cool.
Paintballs I know nothing about.
Exploding caps are like a plastic blunt with a cap gun cap on the end of it.
And that's about it as far as commercially available darts go.
The variations are limitless once you start tailoring them or making them from scratch.
Stoppers can be made from golf tees, cotton balls, corks, and lots of things really.
I've found that willow buds are good during their premature stages before the anthers start spitting out pollen.
I could go on but this should get you started.

the paintballs that fit the blowguns are sold in 300 and 1000 bags at our local flea market. we are pretty hicksville even for good redneck toys like this and even we have em...

it is a lot cheaper.

and while the schoolchildren are fun, one needs to get the balls with clear gel and case; these won't leave them looking like they have psychedelic measles.

what they are great for is seeing off skunks, possums, and other ppl's pets from your yard. sticking them in the freezer or leaving em outside if it is cold will make the gel thicken and sting more.

i'm not an animal hater, but i dropped almost a thousand bucks at the vet's in a month over a possum fucking up my cats. anything goes at that point. the blowgun worked because it could be left loaded, i have several and thus if the first missed i still had a shot without having alerted the little fucker, and it was freezing...those balls were almost solid. they had to hurt.

3-4 foot of 5/8 inch electric tubing - presto.

Pack of 8" bamboo skewers + glossy magazine + tape to make the darts.

Roll a paper cone about 3in long fitting the tube diameter and fortify with a bit of tape. This is your flight. Cut off the tip of the cone and stick the bamboo skewer through it so that the point sticks out 4 inches and theres an inch of skewer behind the flight. Attach the skewer to the cone with some tape.

If desired use a lighter to harden the tip of the skewer.

Presto, shot from the electric tube you have a dart that can nail an orange to a plaster wall.

Dont shoot animals, people or cause property damage guys. Not cool.

Jokes. Only jokes. I don't think anyone here was actually being serious about shooting blowguns at people's children!
And well, I've already posted my disclaimer which exempts me from liability.

But back to your post.
You don't find 5/8" to be too large of a bore size?
I picked up some 1/2" PVC pipes and that feels almost too wide to me.
Do those larger bore sizes have an advantage like increased velocity or range?

1/2" and 5/8" are both good, it depends on which you can shoot the furthest.

Bigger bore = heavier dart which at the same speed gives more penetration.

The tiny bores of commercial blowguns make my eyes pop out by drag resistance

ohh ok..
so a larger bore enables you to shoot not only a larger dart, but a heavier dart...without experiencing severely diminished range.
I guess that makes sense.
My .40 caliber spike darts don't make it more than 20 feet before they start to drop.
But the piano wire darts can go at least 3 or 4 times that far before they start getting a significant arc in trajectory.

Crossbow spikes, for example, don't look like they will fly very straight for very long but when you put 150 draw weight behind it... you bet it will.

I recommend anyone who doesnt have the lungs of a horse to not take a 5/8" tube but a 1/2" one though.

Most commercial blowguns are .40 cal, but 1/2" PVC/ABS tube works great if not better.

Bamboo skewers can be hardened by heating the tips with a lighter and hardened further if you subsequently make them composite by impregnating them with a hard glue or lacquer.
