PF Jar Questions

I am using 1/4 pint jars, since that is all I could find at the time (I'm just using them for casings anyways, so there's really no problem). A majority of the jars have the surface of the substrate covered in mycelium. I was just wondering how much longer I should leave them. I've read a week and I've also read to birth them when primordia starts appearing. Whats the truth? I just don't want a half colonized cake getting contams. Oh yeah, it was a homemade syringe from a Thai print.
BTW, I would recommend 1/4 pint jars for doing casings. I couldn't believe how fast they colonized (like 10 days).

I've waited anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks after total surface colonization. I've noticed that when you wait longer, the cakes seem to be much "harder", which I'm assuming is because the myc. network is much denser.

Thanks Loop. I'll leave them in until next Friday, unless primordia starts popping up.
Another question, I'm going to do a 50/50 casing, but have neither the time nor money to go pick up some lime. Will my casing still be fine? Also, would a casing layer of 50/50 peat and coir be better than peat and verm?

I honestly cant give you a real answer to that, I've always done straight verm. casings. from what I understand, you have to be werry of the Ph with 50/50 casings other wise they can contam prety easily.

Do a coir casing. You only need coir and oyster shell and both are dirt cheap

Have you got decent yields with just straight verm? I've heard almost nothing but crap about it.

If you are doing cakes it is recomended to wait until primordia forms until your remove the substrate from the jars. Casing it is once it is fully coloonized. But you cant see the center of the cake so how do you know it is fully colonized? Well there really isn't any way to find out so usually people let their jars incubate for a few more days.

You would want to use a 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casing. The Verm/Coco Coir casing is the best IMHO.
