My Jumbled Fumbled experiment
    #1191838 - 01/05/03 08:21 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

on 12/12/02 I mixed 10, .5pint jars using this formula

1/8 cup of brown rice powder (
1/2 cup of horticultural vermiculite
40-45 cc's

Sterilized by boiling on low heat for 1 hour
!12/13/02 Innoculated each jar with 1cc PF Classic

Today I have 2 contaminated cake 4 cakes with small germination, 3 cakes with 20% but completly halted for atleast 2 weeks 1 cake with 50% but halted and 2 cakes with no growth at all

Anyone know whats going? Should I just ditch this experiment, and use my last syringe?(Strophoria straing which has been discontinued by PF)- should I use a different substrate formula this time?

Bigger jars take longer to colonize. The longer something takes to colonize the higher risk that foreign contaminants can invade. I will try 1/4 pint jars as soon as my spore syringe gets here and I will tell you all how it goes.

After few weeks muselium probably used up all oxigen in the jars (if they tightly closed), that is why it stopped growing. Happens to me all the time, but its not a problem, I just losen lid a bit, and make sure that incubator is very clean.
OR
You might have bacteriological (not mold-can't see it, only smell  ) contamination. If that happened start all over again and improve your sterility technics.

It wasn't too clear in your post as to whether or not you were using pint jars, or 1/2 pint jars. I'm assuming that since you said .5, you meant half-pint, if this is so, I would change my substrate recipe. Doesn't sound like you have enough BRF....or water for that matter. PF's maximum fruiting formula (for me at least): 1/4 BRF, 1/2 Vermiculite, 1/4 Water.
