has anyone attempted or know of anyone who has spawned with lets say 8 parts organic compost and lets say 2 parts cow manure? would this produce a good spawning media or should all spawning materials be up of specifically poo, straw, etc...? thanx

I haven't attempted it myself, but I believe as long as there is nutritional value in the media, you should have no problems. I prefer to use one source or the other, as opposed to mixing them. You could always try a smaller spawn run to see if it works out.
Good luck, Jim

I'm definately interested to hear about it. Is there a reason you're looking to mix them? Faster spawn time, just more substrate in general, or what?

the interest in mixing the spawning material came from reading on some site last year about gathering compost material, pasteurizing it then leaving it outside to cool and to regain some of its bacterial content it had before pasteurizing.(i hope i got that right) well, i kinda figured why not pasteurize some of the compost thats been breaking down in the back for a about a year now, this is basically waste products from the garden from maybe a summer or 2 ago. upon diggin into it i noticed that nice earthy smell compost is supposed to have when it has finished the cycle of breaking down. it is not soil. so, why not add some manure to it, and then pasturize. it should work correct?

i was going to try one with the verm and peat the other without. i thought you couldnt spawn peat moss and verm or is it different when its mixed together? i was going to use 50-50 to case after colonization. what type of nutritional value would the peat and verm have or would it be to retain moisture?

Some people compost chopped wheat straw and cow manure and all kinds of good garden vegetable stuff, then when it gets done if it is too clumpy just mix in some verm to the compost and spawn with birdseed, ...don't forget to pasteurize, you could maybe mix in gypsum too maybe,...

the compost was a wee bit clumpy, is this okay? there werent huge clumps, but some small ones. will this still colonize or can it cause a problem before colonizing?
