Hey Damian read thru the whole thread and looks like a kick ass tek. Got 3 monotubs about to start now with 3 strains, just for testing.

Oh by the way my tub has 3 tiny (1/8th inch) holes at the 'handle' location. Should these be taped over or left as is?

If it is the same tub as mine then I have them to I have the same thing, they are on the underside of the handle. I don't mess with them. Good luck.

Thanks man. Yeah mine are 18gal sterlite tubs. The holes are on the undersides of the handle as you say. Thanks!
Just sterilizing my spawn now. Going to do 3 tubs, one for each strain. Lipa Yai, one Redspore, and one maybe Brazil strain. Just for fun, see what grows well, and I love the look of the Lipas.
Thanks again your Tek is Legendary. My friend already spawned his to the tub and its almost colonized. Can't wait to see results!

One more question Damian, not sure if you ever added any gypsum but the bigwigs on here (RR etc) seem to say gypsum makes a -huge- difference in mushroom production.
Any comments on efficacy and amount to add per tub?

I can comment on this, I have found noticeable increase with using gypsum. I make it mandatory for all my cakes/bulk/casings.
Its worth it

Shea your posts were some of the ones I saw to make me ask this question. For this much substrate (about 15 quarts including the spawn) hwo much would you add, roughly a quart?

I'm sorry I used google to search this thread better and have seen damian already answer this:

Damion5050 said: Add it to the tek. Put all dry ingredients in the bucket before pouring water over them. I would do 1-2 pints of gypsum.

Use between a 5-10% ratio of gypsum in your bulk sub

Gypsum contains calcium and sulfur. Both nutrients are beneficial for mushroom growth.
Example;
Shiitake grain spawn jars inoculated on the same day.
Jar on the left is with gypsum. Jar on the right is without gypsum.

Back;

As you can see this is why I basically say gypsum should be mandatory. it also keeps grains nice and loose and helps prevent PH swings in a casing mix

I use 2% gyp in this recipe cuz the 5-10% thats recommended turns my sub into a cement block.
I do use it in my grain soak along with adding it to my sub mix.

Can it be construction gypsum or does it have to be garden grade?

You can use drywall or plaster of paris if you have too.
For dry wall try your best to separate the paper backing and then powder the gypsum.
For Plaster of Paris spread it out and let it dry then powder and use aswel.
But if you can get gypsum in bulk from a local nursery then do so

Well as already stated you can use gypsum if you decide to. I personally dont like to use it. I like things simple lol. As I stated with my coir tek if you use a pint of gypsum that would give you about a 3-5% ratio of gypsum to bulk sub.

I one time grinded up blue, orange, and green chalk and use that with no problem

Chalk is calcium carbonate, not calcium sulfate like Gypsum. Not sure if the effecs of one vs the other though.
