You can use cakes as spawn.

Hi, I'm unclear on one thing. The tub I'm using has an airtight lid. For step 13 where it's wrapped in the bag and left for 10 days, I see that the bag is knotted, but what about the lid?
Should I put the lid on and seal as well, or do I turn the lid over or just leave it off altogether?

Probably an absolutely stupid noob question, but if I were to use PF brown rice cakes crumbled up instead of grains there's no reason why this wouldn't also work, is there?

If it looks dry I'd soak with lots of water (mineral water. Boiled and cooled). Like floaded. and 12 hours later drain excess water. Then lots of fresh air and cover back again. Some people put another layer of casing. I wouldn't.

If you wanted to make 1/4 the amount of substrate, obviously using 1/4 the amount of materials, would it still work in a 5 gallon bucket and lid? Or would you need a smaller bucket with lid to hold the heat in a smaller area?

this tek is for 4qts of spawn minimum up to equal parts spawn/sub.. if you have less spawn just prepare less substrate. EZ fix.

it should still work fine but ideally it would hold heat better in a smaller vessel filled vs a large mostly air filled vessel unless you insulated it heavily (put inside another bucket or two).

that step can be skipped completely now, we have learned over the years that light has zero effect on colonizing substrate. leave the garbage bag in the garbage can.
put your lid on fully sealed for colonizing and when its ready 10~14days just set it on top not sealed and mist if it looks dry and fan with the lid after misting and set back on top loosley.

For a 50 liter mono (12"x18.5") does this make enough sub? Or do I need to make it with 2 bricks of coir?

Hi, how long could 1/2 pint spawn jars last after they're fully colonized/pure white? I have to travel and might need to delay mixing them with my monotub for 10-15 days after they're fully colonized! Big risk?
Thanks!

You may want to put them in the refrigerator to stall them but I wouldn't really worry either way. If you come back and they have pinned in the jars, takem out, pluck the mushrooms and do what you wanted to all along.
