Strange black stuff on top of cap

Recently, a strain of cubensis that I've been cultivating has begun to produce mushrooms with a very weird feature: The top of the cap, instead of being the usual golden-brown color, is darker -- blue to black. You can wipe whatever this is off the cap easily to expose the natural color. What is wiped off appears to be the same color as a spore print. It happens to all the mushrooms that grow off that casing. There are no signs of contamination, so I doubt (maybe hope is a better word) it's a contamination issue.
Is this a normal feature of certain strains? I'm growing South American for the most part, although I suspect there may be cakes/casings from another strain.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be?

You should post a photo. However it seems to be some spores fallen from some tallest shrooms. I don't think it's a contamination.

Actually, it could be spores that fell from the shortest mushroom as well.
Never happened to me, but yes, it's possible.

here is boxtop's Avatar for an example.
You can see that Spores are on some of the taller shrooms. Spore can go anywhere!

Good observation You have nothing to worry about, they're only spores.

It's kind of scary at first, but the spores do end up on the tops of even the tallest mushrooms. I remember junking my 4 very first four pf cakes (when I used cakes) because they all had some mysterious black/purple mold on them. Live and learn! Jim

That's OK. So are spores. But I still wonder how exactly the spores get there....

Well millions of microscopic spores can go anywhere. The slightest of drafts will cause the spores to arrise in elevation.

Pixies that come in to your fruiting chamber during the night and help deposit spores when the mushrooms are ready. I read that somewhere

Yes! Perfect detective work guys! It didn't make sense to me that they were spores when I saw it for the first time: It was a lone fruit in the middle of a casing. But the three casings around it were bursting... ;-)
Taking a closer look at my setup, the casing in question was right next to the air exhaust for my setup. (I "fan" them with a 12volt computer fan on a timer -- draws the air through a vacuum cleaner HEPA filter first.) So that's a lot of air at once... I can see how it would easily blow spores across my setup.
That pic from Roadkill is exactly what they look like. Thanks!
